Isaiah 66:2
For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the LORD. “ But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

Yes, broken hearted, contrite, realizing the depths of sin that you have fallen to. Weary, weak and tired. A d heavy laden with burdens hard to bear.

In Jesus, we can be shed of all of these things, for His yoke is light.

In Christ,

Being broken before the Lord is realizing the goodness of God and how good God has been toward us through His mercy and grace that comes from His Son. When we come to Christ by faith and learn of Him, that's when we begin to learn how to be meek and lowly through a humble and contrite heart. We could be the worse sinner on the planet but when we approach God by faith with a humble and contrite heart and receive His goodness, God will not despise that heart.

The poor in spirit are those that have been reduced through the plan of God and have no strength of their own and have learned to totally depend and trust upon God's provisions of mercy and grace. In receiving this mercy and grace, they are edified and built up in their spirit and experience the joy and many happinesses that comes with that mercy and grace.

Ps 34:18, 51:17, Is 57:15, 66:2, 1Pt 5:5,6, Jm 4:6
Ps 13:5, 31:7

Hi
I agree. Those who have come to rely on Jesus are the poor in spirit. In fact Jesus disciples are even called by him "little ones" to show their lowly staus but to also indicate how they are cared for by Jesus.

Matthew 10:42
And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Jesus is obviously of great stature to be able to call adults who are his disciples "little ones" vcause of their correct and rightful poverty of spirit.

I don’t know the answer to that, but there is a similar statement in the book of Luke that leads me to think maybe Jesus is talking about people who don’t have a lot of money:

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” Luke 6:20 RSV

poor in spirit has to do with humility.

The reformers taught that self-esteem was a sin.

The only time self and esteem are in the same verse it says to esteem others better than your-self.

When I think of people who are poor in spirit, what comes to me are broken people. People who suffer from depression or a great sadness. People who have lost hope.

I agree. For they are blessed in that they will be lifted up and given hope by God himself. What a blessing that is.

I think being poor in spirit is not a change in openion of what we beleived den n what we beleive now...being poor in spirit is to be found in lack, be found in need of God ,where u cant do nothing but fall on ur kness where there is a cry in ur heart for God,don care who says what about u but u cant help but pray, out of that comes the state of hunger for him ,hunger for his kingdom and his righteousness, and to those is the kingdom of God,
Are we seeking him?

No that is not what I think Jesus means, because we should always have Hope in the Lord and we are not to be depressed or suffer from great sadness. that is not what God wants us to be.

Self-esteem is not a bad thing. It is not about being depressed. it is about esteeming GOD higher then ourselves. not placing others above us and thinking they are better then us but acknowledging that GOD is better then we are.

i'll post some scripture because when I don't everyone gets offended and misunderstand my words....

Philippians 2

1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

the point is if everyone does the above then everyone will not only look out for their own interests but also everyone elses and we will act as the True body of Christ in unity and love. that does not mean to be depressed and not to know your value to Christ. We are God's children and should never forget that or be made to feel less then who God made us to be.

Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

Luke 12

29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things[c] shall be added to you.
32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom

Philippians 4:5-7
New King James Version (NKJV)
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Brothers and sisters remember we are God's children. do not let the lies dwell in your hearts or minds but place it upon the altar of God and with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. May God's peace and love dwell in your hearts and life.
