Genesis 2:17 says

"but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

However, when Adam & Eve ate of the fruit, they did not die. Could someone please explain this for me?

they did die the moment they ate of it.

Spiritually. The moment they ate, they were separated from God (also known as spiritual death)

We can prove it by how they acted. The things of God are foolishness to those who are not his.. Yet these people who walked with god and knew him intimately. All of a sudden forgot who he was, or what he was. (lets hide from him, Blame shift etc etc)

They, like us, were dead to Christ, and had to be born again.

900 years later they died physically, a result of sin, but not a punishment of sin.

Firstly we must remember that God has the right to exercise the prerogative of mercy. HE is not bound by His laws. No doubt He took into account that they had not done it without outside persuasion. And He thus provided for them a 'covering', an atonement. It did not remove the penalty, but it delayed it. He also had in mind the One Who would come to finally defeat Satan, provide forgiveness of sins and bring in everlasting righteousness. 'He shall bruise your head'.

Secondly we should see that on the day that they ate they were excluded from the tree of life without which they could not continue to live for ever. Effectually they became subject to death at that point. God merely delayed the sentence..

God told Abraham he would give him a son who would start a nation. He did give Abraham that son over a decade later. And that son was the beginning of a nation that didn't even look like a nation for 400 years. And then once it did look like a nation, the nation had no land of their own.

Adam and Eve didn't die? Do they now live in New Jersey? lol

God keeps his promises. We just have this expectation that he'll do it NOW! Where we keep coming up with that one is a mystery in itself. (And, I too am guilty of expecting God to act immediately.)

There were two trees in the garden....the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life.

they could have eaten of the tree of life but they chose to do what GOD said not to do and they listened and obeyed a lie(disobedience).

since JESUS died for our sins we now once again have the chance to listen to the WORD of GOD.

They lost their relationship with God spiritually, and all others who follow the path of doing their own thing is dead spiritually, which the Bible says the wicked are twice dead, physically, and spiritually.

They did die, they were no longer immortal. Not just them either, but the entirety of the world and creation began to die as well.

Death is not just a verb or an action, though it is that also. Death is also a noun. A place, a thing, and even a personified character. By them eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, which we all now knoweth death entered the world in all it's meanings because of our disobedience and this be the curse upon all men and all men are guilty through relation to Adam and Eve. So from that moment sadness and despair, but yet there is still one hope. The good God and his beloved son Jesus whom showed the love and forgiveness to cover the man and the woman in Genesis to Gospels, he is the Christ and the good one always, and has overcome both world and death.

1 Corinthians 15:20-26

[SUP]20 [/SUP]But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
[SUP]21 [/SUP]For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
[SUP]22 [/SUP]For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
[SUP]23 [/SUP]But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
[SUP]24 [/SUP]Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
[SUP]25 [/SUP]For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
[SUP]26 [/SUP]The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

I think “die” means “suffer.” Here is another example of that:

[17] "Yet your people say, `The way of the Lord is not just'; when it is their own way that is not just.
[18] When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall die for it.
[19] And when the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does what is lawful and right, he shall live by it.
[20] Yet you say, `The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways." Ezekiel 33:17-20 RSV

Adam died in the day that he ate of the fruit.

2Pe_3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

the hebrew literally says 'dying you will die'...in other words it is referring to death as a process...

when they ate the fruit they doomed themselves to die...they had begun all of the degenerative processes that eventually lead to death...

Your answer is eternally-gratefull's response, which post #2 contains.

See also Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Sin separated Adam and Eve from God. If you think they did not die, but God said they would, then you have to do some digging.
God said they would die.
But you say they did not die when they ate. (That's okay. You are asking.)

Either
God was wrong when He said they would die,
or God changed His mind after they ate,
and therefore, Satan is right, "You will not die."

Or there's a better explanation.
Yep, got to understand the meaning of the word death.

God was right, as you know. In fact, your asking shows you want to stay with the explicit statement of the bible. That's most commendable. You aren't just throwing out silly comments and statements.

What changed after they ate of the tree of knowledge? They were no longer on "good" terms with God. To Adam and Eve, God felt distant, they felt guilt. There was enmity between them and God. What is that? Sin and death. Separated from the life and peace of God.

They were separated from the tree of life. Their physical bodies would begin the slow process of aging.

God was right. Satan was wrong. Adam and Eve died.

Thousands of years later, however, an innocent would die for them and for the sin of the whole world.

Hope this will help you with your understanding of death.

I believe that when Adam and Eve took of the fruit they lost the intimacy and fellowship with God, the father and took life in their own hands.

However if you continue reading God had a redemption plan in the death of Christ that we could be forgiven of the desires of our flesh and regain that intimacy with God that we all desire to have.

I like to picture it as a lake with a river feeding into it.
Adam was the lake and at the Fall fresh water was cut off (spiritual death).
Over time without spiritual replenishment the lake begins to stagnate until finally it shrivels up to nothing (physical death).

In Hebrew, the word 'yom', which is translated 'day' can mean either a 24 hour cycle of darkness and light, an indefinite period of time, or an event.

The word day functions exactly the same way in English. I will give examples of each usage:

Day a 24 hour cycle of darkness and light: There are 7 days in a week.

Day an indefinite period of time: In my grandfather's day a dollar was much more valuable than it is now.

Day an event: When the Summer Olympics come to Cheyenne Wyoming, that will be the day I buy tickets.

In the verse you cited, the word day means event. In the (day) event you eat of it you will surely die.

If it happens, this will be the result.
