re: Bible scholars; 1 Cor. 13:12
Dear friend who asked about 1 Cor. 13:12.
Here is that verse in the ONT (Orthodox New Testament):
"For now we see by means of a mirror, darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall fully know even as I also was fully known."
Note: "We see by means of a mirror, darkly ("en ainigmati", lit., "in the enigma." or "in a riddle"). Ancient mirrors were of polished metal, not of glass, those in Corinth being famous. The figure of the hand held ancient mirror illustrates both our imperfect and impartial vision of divine things.
"Saint Chrysostom: "He says, "darkly", to a superlative degree that the present knowledge is very partial. "But then face to face" ("tote de prosopon prosprosopon"). Not as though God has a face, but in order to express greater manifestation and clarity. Do you see how we learn all things by gradual advance? [Hom. 34, PG, 61:311 (col. 287).]."
God bless us and save us in Christ Jesus. May God have mercy on us. Amen. In Erie PA Scott R. Harrington
