2 Opinions 5:1-4

There shall be found among you none who are lazy in speech or writing of the English language. Thou shalt diligently teach thy son and thy son's son the correct spelling and usage of words, the correct usage of verb tense and pronouns, the correct usage of contractions, and further elements of style. And in time to pass, when thy son shall ask thee, "what dost thou mean by all these rules of spelling and grammar?" Then thou shalt say unto him, "it is because of what the Lord did for me in freeing me from the bondage of intellectual laziness."
Hahaha! 2 Opnions I LOVE that. Got a good belly laugh out of that :-D

Let me start off by saying, what I'm not saying. I'm NOT saying people who post MUST have perfect grammar and syntax in their posts. I'm NOT saying spelling must be pristine and perfect to post.

Ok, now that this is out of the way, let me say what I do mean to say!

I'm strongly encouraging folks to have some bare minimum of spelling, punctuation and text formatting in your posts before you hit that submit button.

I don't think what I'm asking is difficult or requires a higher education. It's just proper courtesy to the readers of your posts.

This is all stuff I had learned by the second or third grade.

So please, try to follow these guidelines for post readability.

1. Start your thoughts\sentences off with a capital letter. This helps us know where your thoughts start and stop. These are examples of capital letters. A B C X Y Z.

2. End your thoughts\sentences with a period. This helps us know where your thoughts end and where a new thought will begin. Knowing where your thought starts and stops makes it easier for us to follow!

3. Please don't type a LONG dense paragraph. Anything over five sentences gets difficult to read. So break it up a little.

Do these things out of courtesy to those using this board and also out of courtesy to me! I read every single post, and to keep this board peaceful I have to actually know what you're saying!

Here's an example of what I'm trying to get this board to avoid.......

yeah sew like paragraphs that are long are sooo annoying then like when they are being read my brain practically implodes out of frustration because i have no idea what the poster is trying to say not that it's evil for someone to not know the bare minimum of syntax and grammar but good grief how do they expect to be understood....right know what I meen yeah it's just difficult to understand and I just don't know do they really expect folks to fully understand tham maybe i'm the only one hoo haz problems reading really long dense paragrahps with bad spelling no syntax and no puncutation what so ever but eye reely don't think i am the only one am i No that's not possible I think others have the same problem too I dont think its unreasonable to ask others to have some bare minimum of punctuation and syntax just out of courtesy to the readers of this board and the other mods who have to read this stuff and make sure the board is functioning in a civil manner..iz that really too much to ask..no not reall...most of this stuff was learned by the third grade anywayz n like i dunno possibly if folks would just proof read their stuff before they hit submit then maybe like they could possibly..Have a more readible paragraph n stuff..maybe possisbly man i just don't know by now I think you see what I mean about courtesy when posting at least I hope you see what i mean or maybe you don't maybe this entire paragraph is as clear as can be to which I would be totally amazed and it would make me question EVERYTHING i know aobut humanity.

I can understand the above comment, but I must ask. Is English your 1st, 2nd or even your third language.
Your roots I assume have a written language.

Most of the worlds population have little if any English, including many whom live and grow up in what is called an English speaking country.

Your post sounds like an excellent reason for those who don't have to have what they write proofread before it is posted to start a place where language skills could be tweaked.

Be Well in Christ.

Peter,

In replying to this thread, you wrote one, huge, run-on sentence, with no punctuation. I had to read it over several times, before I understood what you were actually saying; which ironically is EXACTLY the purpose of this thread.

Reference to this sentence:

Your post sounds like an excellent reason for those who don't have to have what they write proofread before it is posted to start a place where language skills could be tweaked.

Um what? Have you not heard of a comma, or two or three...?

Not trying to be pedantic, but the irony of it astounds me. I just had to comment.

Thanks- made them myself.

Perth is COLD!!!
Cold must be a relative term???? Doesn't Australia have perfect weather? (Of course you do have to stand on your head, but that is a small price to pay.)

Thank you for putting this out there. Sometimes things are so poorly written we simply stop reading. And that's pretty sad, as they may have something very important to share. :)

I think we are actually talking about punctuation-not so much spelling-since many of us,having a command of the english language, can't actually spell worth beans!! Haha! God Bless!

Yeah,I've done it too-If my tiny brain gets overworked,it shuts down and I lose my concentration.
This makes it hard to get the gist of the post,as I have to read it 2-3 times! (Or maybe I'm just simple) lol--But please-if you cannot speak english well, and want to post,we will still read and do our best. I personally value every person's opinion here-so please don't stop posting-just try to make it so we all can read it! God Bless You All! I love You and God Loves all of us!!!!

Hmm point taken. However, keep in mind that there may be some posters whose first language is not English. Given the circumstances in the United States of America, unfortunately, there may be some english speaking posters who may not have a gotten the correct grammar/syntax edu..so they are communicating at the level they are at. So the flip side of that is please be gracious to those who may not have the basic skill set you mentioned at the very beginning of this post.

This was addressed in the very first post. We're not saying everyone has to speak perfect English. That was made clear at the beginning. It's more a matter of those who can, taking the time to make their posts readable.

Thanks Ira for your feedback. When I went and re-read the posts, I didn't see anything that had addressed the issue of english not being a first language, it could have been that was implied or I missed it all together. IN any event, the bigger issue for me is .. after I typed the post and posted it I decided I wanted to edit it and then delete. When I went in to edit it and cleared out all of the message the first time it let me an I saved it. When I tried the same thing for this post, I got an error message stating that my message was too short. How can I {in the future} if I type something and post and then decide I don't want it to post or anything to post, so not to have this issue happen again.. as I thought I had deleted this post.

Thanks,
Maggie

when you click edit there is a "radio button" (the kind that is circular and you can chose only one of them) where you can mark a post for deletion :)
