Are we called to rest in the finished work on the cross? What does that mean? What would that look like?

Good questions.

Part of it means to trust in what Christ has already done on the cross and in His resurrection. It is all by grace through faith. It means ceasing from our own works and relying on Christ alone.

Hebrews 4:9-11 (KJV)
[SUP]9 [/SUP] There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

[SUP]10 [/SUP] For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

[SUP]11 [/SUP] Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

How that looks like will be how the Holy Spirit within you shows you how to walk out what is true inside of you now because you are a new creation in Christ. The inner man of the new heart. The Holy Spirit will work with you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Phil. 2:13

I encourage you to feed on Christ Himself and listen to message that speak of what the Lord has done for us.

It means we can stop working to try to make ourselves acceptable to God and rest in Christ and His sufficiency.

It would look a lot like the branch of a grape vine full of good fruit. John 15:5

No offense but it is the complete opposite of that. It's in knowing He will never leave us nor forsake us and that He loves us with an everlasting love that bears the fruit of His love in us to love Him back.

Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light

Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you

Entering into rest is 100% surrender, trust and faith in what he has already done and what he is going to do on your behalf.

I agree with others that the manifestation of a spiritually mature saint at rest in Christ, is the manifestation of all 9 fruit of the Spirit.

This morning sometime it came to me that we are to rest in that Jesus has forgiven us of all sin. One way we do this I believe is b thanking God that he has forgiven us for our sins and not trying hard to search our hearts for sin. The Holy Spirit can reveal that to us himself. I believe that I may be good to examine ourselves on some level for sin but not in excess. Tell me what you think of this. Thank you for your posts.

The cross says we are loved and forgiven.
Letting that love into our hearts to heal, cleanse and remake us is resting in the cross.
Out of our hearts flows love to others, that that broken hearted might find comfort and life.

Some fear that doing good will trap them into legalism, while the cross roots us in Christs
love helping peoples needs. The more we see the cross the more we know we serve our
King out of debt and not because we have goodness in ourselves, but only in the love he
has shown us.

I agree. Entering His rest begins with knowing that in Christ we have forgiveness, and thanking God for it. Without that basis we will not rest, but will rather try to work for what we already have in Him. :)

Hebrews 4:8-11 "For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is ENTERED INTO HIS REST, he also hath ceased FROM HIS OWN WORKS, as God did from his. LET US LABOUR therefore to enter into THAT REST, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief."

revelation 14:3 "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from HENCEFORTH: Yea, saith the Spirit, that THEY MAY REST FROM THIER LABOURS; and their works do follow them."

1 timothy 4:7-12 "But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and EXERCISE THYSELF rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that WHICH IS TO COME. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore WE BOTH LABOUR and SUFFER REPRAOCH, BECAUSE WE TRUST IN THE LIVING GOD, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe."

The suffering of Jesus, is the very reason we labour and follow with all we Have within us, and what we have in us, was given through His Gospel. Our true rest is when we pass into the heavens because this life is for Labor and serving in the things of God taught to us by Jesus ...the things of Gods Kingdom. and the rest we experience now comes because we are walking in those things He taught.

"The branch of the vine does not worry, and toil, and rush here to seek for sunshine, and there to find rain. No; it rests in union and communion with the vine; and at the right time, and in the right way, is the right fruit found on it. Let us so abide in the Lord Jesus.”

If resting is meant for the future when we get to heaven then why does the writer of Hebrews say let us labour therefore to enter into that rest? We wouldn't be exhorted to labor to enter into a rest we will only receive in heaven.

Jesus has started a good work in you and is faithful to complete it. Trusting in that if we have given our lives over to him he's behind the wheel now.
Each day I rest in knowing that Jesus is in me and I in him, that no matter what Jesus is in control. Now I'll be the first one to say I don't know how or what but I do know my heart gets softer, my mind gets renewed, my lips start singing praises, and my co-workers say "here he goes again..lol.
I guess what it boils down to is trust. No matter how hard the day goes, how many battles you lose. Remembering that he loves you and is that faithfulness friend rest assured that his work is done and he is doing a work inside you.

to me, t6his is not resting in Jesus, this is resting in our ability to work hard at loving God. This is in reality resti9n gin self. And your ability. Not Christ.

Amen, this is called seeking after the things of the spirit (things of God) and NOT things of the Flesh (things which benefit us or self focus)

I have never heard anyone say that doing good would trap people in legalism. The sky is blue...

I don't chafe at the term "our doing". We do participate in what God is doing in and through us.

What I would chafe at is the notion that we put "the doing good" from ourselves by self-effort and not from the life of Christ in us. It's all a matter of where this "work originates" from - our flesh or from our inner man in Christ.

Outwardly they can look the same.
I know that only God that looks on our heart can answer that question but it is subtle difference between works-based righteousness and faith-based righteousness.

Another term I use a lot that may throw some off is that I say we are to "rest" in the finished work of Christ. The word "rest" can bring the connotations that we do nothing which is not the truth. It's the exact opposite.

I won't speak for the others but as far as works or fruit go from a believer in Christ - here is what I believe when considering John Chapter 15 and the "works/fruit" of a believer.

Jesus is the Vine - we are the branches. The branch bears fruit..it does not produce it.

Without Him we can do nothing. We are to remain/abide/rest in the Lord - abide/remain/rest in the Lord and what He has done for us in His finished work. John 15

The life of the Vine supplies the "sap"needed for the bearing of fruit but it is His fruit that is produced in us.

Resting/remaining/abiding in the Lord is not a lazy passive existence. When we know that God has already provided everything we need and we access His wisdom, provision, strength by faith - we'll be governed by the Holy Spirit in a highly strategic and active life.

Resting/remaining/abiding in the Lord is not an inactive lifestyle. It's a Spirit-led lifestyle where we flow in good works ( His fruit bearing in us ) that God had planned for us all along.

Resting/remaining/abiding in the Lord is our obedience in action.

Resting/remaining/abiding in the Lord is our warfare.

Resting/remaining/abiding in the Lord is our faith in action. - we are fighting the good fight of faith

Hebrews 4:10-11 (NASB)
[SUP]10 [/SUP] For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

[SUP]11 [/SUP] Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.

There is a vast difference between "us" doing things and the Lord doing things through and in us.

We can do things in our own flesh like Abraham tried to fulfill the will of God by creating an Ishmael or wait for the Lord to work through us to produce the child of promise - Isaac. Galatians 4:22-24, 30

Psalm 127:1 (NASB)

Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it
; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain

The legalists hate this idea, doing good will trap them into legalism.
They spend their time trying to decide if a good work is from the self, evil, or from God, good.

In their world sinful acts are immediately forgiven, so the only issue is good works done from
God or not. So they are mighty sensitive about this subject. I mean, if you do a good work
from self, is that sinful, unbelieving so dooming you to hell, or is it neutral for a believer.

Do the number of self sourced good works cancel out the God sourced good works.
And what happens if you are only doing good works, to get favour from God, because you just
cannot help the reward element of Jesus's comments, even though they were only said to bait
legalists, it is so so so so so hard to stop being a legalist, lol.

Is a self good work worthy of Hell, because it is unbelief, so loosing your salvation, except that
is impossible. So maybe good works are not relevant or even judged, lol. It is all so confusing,
better do nothing to be on the safe side, because God knows the heart and it is the heart that
matters not what you do? Right?????

I said some people. If you want to put yourself in the some people that is your problem, lol.
The only way this could mean you is you identify with the trap, but then it is not slander.

And if you have no fear of legalism because you do not follow it at all, then it does not mean
you. So I cannot slander someone by saying some people fear doing good will trap them.

It is all so weird, I cannot even work it out. There has to be a place for counsellors here to
help walk through this stuff.

I know of a condition, where whenever you watch television you are expecting the announcer
is about to mention your name. If you get this feeling seek professional help, they can help you
trust me, a lot of people suffer from this and it has nothing to do with what is actually going on
but how your mind is working.
