Paul continuing from the last chapter asks a question:

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Notice that his answer is no! for if we are dead to sin then how can we sin. in other words those who continue in sin/breaking the law, are not really dead to sin.

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

So when we accept Jesus death and are baptized we die with him as seen in next verse.

Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

See we are buried with Jesus into death. but not just this we are raised out of the water as he was raised from death. and the result is walking in newness of life. If our life is really new, the n how can we do the old sins of the old nature.

Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

notice that we die with Him and are raised with Him so that our old man dies and along with it the body of sin is destroyed. so we no longer serve sin. so If you are not free or being freed from sin then you have not died yet according to Paul.

Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

So if we are dead with Jesus then we will also live with him without fear of death. notice that Jesus died to son and lived to God. so how should we live?

Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

so we need not obey sin anymore.

Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Notice that we have a choice in Jesus now. before we served sin without the ability to change. but Jesus changes that. we are told not to yield ourselves to sin but rather to God. now is sin is breaking the law of God then the opposite is keeping it. but faith as Paul has shown before. so now we serve righteousness.
Jesus frees us amen. now for a famous verse:

Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Notice that not being under the law means that sin has no dominion over you. So that means that being under the law makes us a slave to sin. So if you are still a slave to your sinful nature then you are actually under the law. when you are under grace you are no longer a slave to sin. you are free from sin if you have Gods Grace.
Paul makes this clear:

Rom 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

we should not sin because we are not under the law. Romans 7 Paul will show that he agrees with John that sin is breaking the law. so if you are free from sin then you must be obeying the law.

Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Here it is, you can know who your master is by your fruit. sin/breaking the law leads to death and obedience/keeping the law leads to righteousness. remember David said that the law of God is righteousness. If you are finding this hard to grasp go read the earlier chapters in which Paul has built to this stage.

Rom 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

again free from sin means obedience through the spirit.

Rom 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

now see that Paul is reasoning with us, just as once before the grace of Christ you yielded or obeyed iniquity, this word means unrighteousness or lawlessness. so now that you have the grace of Christ yield to obedience which leads to holiness.

check this out,

Rom 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Rom 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

When we were slaves to sin we were free from obedience because we could not obey. and our fruit was shameful sin. which leads to death.

Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Now we are free from sin and can now serve God which brings fruit of holiness which gives us life. See Jesus taught that in order to have eternal life we must obey the commandments. Paul has told us this can only happen through faith.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So if you sin you will die. but if you receive the gift of God you will live.
Friends do not fall for the lie that obeying the law puts you under the law. those who are under the law are those who do not obey God, showing that they do not have the grace of God working through them.

Listen to the words of Jesus on this.

Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
Joh 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
Joh 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

notice that Jesus says if you sin then you are a slave to sin. and the slave to sin will not abide in the house forever. but if Jesus shall make you free you shall be free indeed.
Now let me ask you, if sinning is proof that you are a slave to sin. then what is proof that you are free?
It's the opposite you are growing into a life of obedience.
Paul is teaching exactly what Jesus taught,

Mat 19:17 ...but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
