Man is made in the image of God and has three parts (1Thes 5:23), a human spirit (pneuma), a human soul (psuche) and a human body (soma). The spirit in man is the candle of the Lord (Prov 20:27). The human spirit is dormant until we are regenerated by mercy through the word and the Holy Spirit who lights up our human spirit when we are saved by God's grace (Titus 3:5, Eccl 3:21, 12:7).
The human soul is who we are and is made up of the mind, the emotions, the will (free volition), the conscience and the conscious capacity that is aware of self or God. The human body is the house for the spirit and the soul and performs all works whether they be in the flesh or through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works with our human spirit through the light of God's word to produce faith and good works. The entrance of God's word gives light to our human spirit (the candle of the Lord) to produce the life of God in our soul to be manifested in and through our body.
The human soul is that part of man that identifies who he is and his relationship to God. The soul is either dead in trespasses and sins and is subject to the flesh or it is redeemed and made alive unto God through the blood of Christ and regeneration so it can be subject to the word and the Holy Spirit. The human body is the expression of what the soul is in subjection to whether it be death through the flesh or life through the word and the Holy Spirit.
At death the human spirit goes back to God who gave it (Eccl 12:7). If the soul has been redeemed and regenerated by the word and the Holy Spirit it will leave the body and be present with the Lord (2Cor 5:8). If the soul has not been redeemed it with be separated from the body and be joined with other souls in a reserved place called hell (geenna).
Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (geenna).
In both cases the body goes into the grave without the spirit and the soul and one will be resurrected unto life and the other at a later time will be resurrected unto condemnation (Jn 5:29). When a person dies their human spirit goes back to God who gave it, their human soul goes to be present with the Lord or goes to hell separated from the presence of God and their human body goes into the grave to wait for its resurrection.

They had not worshipped the beast oir his image and had not received his mark on their forehedfs or hands
They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years
The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended
Rev 20:4&5
This is clearly speaking of the soul. The souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Christ came to life. How could this be if they were already alive with Christ in Heaven?
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the lst day
John 6:40
The person will be raised up. Not a body bereft of soul
According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself will come down from Heaven, with a loud commnd, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first(those who have fallen asleep)
After that we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air
1 Thes 4:15-17
So the dead in Christ are the same as those asleep in Christ. How can this be if the are in Heaven?
