… and John 16:12-16 [blb] -

"12 Yet I have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. 13 But when He the, Spirit of truth, shall come, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He may hear, He will speak. And He will declare to you the things coming. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take from that which is Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Because of this, I said that He will take from that which is Mine and will disclose it to you." [see also 1Cor2:10,16b, the Scriptures given to record AFTER His resurrection/ascension]

It's still unclear.

But I am going to guess that you are referring to:

John 7:39 -

"Now He said this concerning the Spirit, whom those having believed in Him were about [or, were certain] to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified."
Do not guess unless you guess correctly.

Give me any example of Scripture interpreting Scripture
Do true Christians continue to sin and/or do they still need to ask the Lord for forgiveness when they do? First John seems to say both "yes" and "no", so which is it??

For instance,

........1 John 3
........9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit* sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

........1 John 1:8-10
........8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
........9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
........10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

Some have attempted to say that 1 John 1 was written to unbelievers alone. But this understanding of the First Chapter is quickly shown to be incorrect by the Apostle in Chapter 2 (which shows us that the Apostle wrote 1 John 1 to believers, not to unbelievers, and believers of every level of maturity in the faith, in fact ... St. John includes himself in this group as well, just FYI).

........1 John 2
........1 My little children, I am writing these things ~to you~ so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with
........the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
........2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
........3 And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
........4 Whoever says “I know Him” but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in Him,
........5 but whoever keeps His word, in Him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in Him:
........6 whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.
........7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment
........is the word that you have heard.
........8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away
........and the true light is already shining.
........9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
........10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
........11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness
........has blinded his eyes.

................12 I am writing to you, little children,
................ because your sins are forgiven for His name’s sake.
................13 I am writing to you, fathers,
................because you know Him who is from the beginning.
................ I am writing to you, young men,
................because you have overcome the evil one.
................I write to you, children,
................ because you know the Father.
................14 I write to you, fathers,
................because you know Him who is from the beginning.
................I write to you, young men,
................because you are strong,
............... and the word of God abides in you,
................and you have overcome the evil one.

~Deut
p.s. - so Scripture helps us interpret Scripture, as does the Hebrew and Greek at times. For instance, here is a verb from 1 John 3:9 that helps us understand what God, through the pen of the Apostle, is actually trying to convey to us.

*ποιέω [poieo] "commit" - present, active, indicative, 3rd person, singular = commit and keep on committing sin - so ποιέω is best translated as, doth not "practice" or "continue in" their former sinful lifestyle. For the true Christian, sin is no longer the thing that characterizes our lives (IOW yes, we sin and then we repent/ask the Lord for forgiveness, but we do not make an impenitent "lifestyle" out of sinning any longer, or our "claim" of being a Christian should not be considered as anything more than that).

What I would like to know is how you differentiate
between a true Christian and a untrue Christian
of the people here on earth present day?

To me they are basically all alike.

The Spirit of God is that to which interprets the Word of God. The Spirit of God is the life of the Word of God. Without the Spirit of God the Word of God would be dead. So when you hear anyone say

Scripture Interprets Scripture
You know they know not the truth
.
Why are you trying to set up a straw man in order to knock it down?

The Holy Spirit is the true interpreter of Scripture, and He uses Scripture to interpret Scripture. And Scripture is indeed the living Word of God.

This post indicates that you are here simply to quarrel with other Christians, and set up straw man arguments.

Those of us who are born again demonstrate that we are who we say we are by what we do & say (and even in how we think/what we think about). We are penitent when we do sin, and our lives (as I believe I mentioned above) are no longer characterized by the impenitent, sinful "lifestyles" that we used to lead.

Sin, in fact, becomes something that is no longer pleasurable, but painful, and it most often horrifies us when we commit it, because we are no longer led by our "old self" (IOW, by our old, sinful nature), and because we love and want to please and honor the One who saved us and had to die for us to make that happen. An unbeliever acts according to his/her nature when they sin, but a believer, IOW, one who has been regenerated/born again, justified by God, and made into a wholly new creature in Christ .. e.g. Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 2:1-5, 8-10, acts against his/her new nature whenever they sin.

Our (a believer's) focus is on pleasing God 24/7 (more and more as He sanctifies us/grows us up in Christ in this life .. e.g. Philippians 1:6; 2:13), not on pleasing ourselves any longer, as well on our growing in our knowledge and understanding of Him, and in our dependence upon Him to see us safely through this life and onto the next one with Him.

We did not become Christians to escape the Lake of Fire (at least not principally), rather, we became Christians to be saved from our sins/sinful lifestyles in the here and now, and from the wrath of God in the age to come (with the added bonus of not ending up in the Lake of Fire, of course).

There is more, but I think you get the point (hopefully).

Those who "claim" to be Christians (but are not), continue in/quickly return to leading the kind of sinful lifestyle that they'd always led prior to making that claim. IOW, they 'say' they are Christians (and may well believe that they are), but they continue to regularly 'act' like those who are not. Most are interested in a "get our of Hell for free" pass in the next life, of course, as well many of the other blessings/benefits that God/the church has to offer them in this life, but they have no real interest in Him beyond that.

How mad did I make the devil?

I have done a lot of damage to his cause here
so I suspect he will be a little mad.

Hi TLIG, unfortunately, I'm going to need to table our conversation until tomorrow sometime. In the meantime however, I have some questions for you to consider (and answer if you'd like to as well, so that I can better understand where you are coming from :)).

1. Are you an atheist, an agnostic, or are you certain that God exists in some form or another?

2. If you believe the latter, and that there is an afterlife to be had with Him in the age to come, is there anything that you believe one has to do (other than die ;)) to prepare for/enter into such an existence, a life with Him in Heaven, IOW, in the eternity beyond the grave? Or perhaps I might ask you this instead, if you died today and you were standing before God in the Judgment, if He asked you why you think you deserve to be with Him in Heaven, what would your answer be?

3. Finally, Jesus, along with His Father and the Holy Spirit, is God. He does not need us, yet He chose to come here and die that horrible death on the Cross for us/on our behalf. Why do you believe that He did that? What good, if any, did it do?

Thanks!

~Deut
p.s. - just to be clear, God is not pleased with me when I sin either (and Satan certainly is), particularly because I am already a Christian and they are both well-aware that I know better!

.........John 1
.........1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
.........2 He was in the beginning with God.
.........3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

.........14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father,
.........full of grace and truth.

Which was before the other?

The Spirit of God or the Word of God?
God is not in our time, therefore this question does not apply.

There was always the Father, He always had the Son and there was always the Spirit of God betwen them or in them.
