What does loving your enemies have to do with protecting yourself and others from them if they try to harm?

Jesus also said: Mat_5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

In many places in the OT that Jesus fulfilled, it speaks of protection of God's chosen people. We are chosen by God.
It's kind of difficult to love one's enemy while pounding on them, isn't it? Im not sure why you posted Mat 5:17 or a reference to the OT.

If someone is attacking me can I at least protect my head while he hits or I have to love him by proving my capacity of cashing in punches in the head?

I don't know why RedTent posted Matthew 5:17 either.

My main understanding is that they both can be your enemies.

Take for example, my manager. My manager and I get into an argument at work and we're both upset at each other. As I go home from work, I see someone attacking my manager. Do I not defend him and just let him get beaten up, or do I fight to protect him?

That is the thing I understand. If we are fighting to defend ourselves or others then it is fine.

Also, I have no problem with fighting for sport either.

However, when you fight just to harm someone, then I believe there is a problem.

There is a Psalm I like to relate to when doing martial arts itself [because I don't like to give myself full credit for my abillity]:

[h=3]Psalm 144:1[/h]King James Version (KJV)

144 Blessed be the Lord my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:

No, it's the definition of having common sense. How can I be christian, when christian has no certain definition, since 41,000 denominations of the faith exist, all with differing definitions of what a 'christian' actually is? Thus, what I'm actually being is sensible and logical. Not 'christian', just, a reader, a person who follows.

What's wrong with that? Get off my back.
This is a common apologetic used by ATHEISTS to discredit Christianity.

That shows the true mindset of the person posting.

Most denominations all agree on the basic tenets of the faith.
Period.
Nothing to see here.
This is just another poorly constructed atheist argument.

Well plenty of people that call themselves 'like christ' certainly are nothing like christ. Therein lies my issue. Don't assume to know me by my label or lack of one.

Plenty of christians turned out to be child molesters. Labels mean nothing.
As I have pointed out, your so called logic is most certainly not logical. You aren't searching God's word for God or looking for people whose lives have been tremendously helped by following Him, you are looking at 41,000 different religious denominations. Besides, you are looking at child molesters to reflect God, it won't work. Scripture says the only place to look is in His word and through the Holy Spirit, but you ignore that.

I am a decrepit old woman in a very small town, you are only 24, and I am not limited as you say you are to gather information about Christ. I only know you by what you say, and what you say labels you as pretty stupid. Surely, there is more to you than these unreasonable statements!

I posted Matt 5:17 to back my reason for posting God principles shown in the OT. I am so used to those of our church today saying that God isn't in anything of the OT, we aren't to learn anything of God there, I am defensive.

I like the point you bring up about the manager, and the point of psalm 144.

Oh alright. That makes sense now. To be frank, I met someone who thought that everything in the OT was just stories, but NT was real. I think there is a lot of mis-information.

Also, thanks for the compliment.

We all know that we have to defend ourselves to save our flesh from being destroy because we are weak in faith; but we shouldn't go around being judgmental toward others because they are weak in other areas. God has said, "don't worry about who can destroy the flesh, because it is only temporary, but worry about the One that can destroy the flesh and soul. The devil can destroy the body, but he can't destroy the soul. We believe that once we have died from the body, that will be the end of our life because we has doubt; and God know that. But if you keep building up your faith daily, then you will not worry about the flesh anymore, but be looking forward to the next stage. So no one is perfect, so do not ever think you are better by putting down others. Only One being can justify our sins, but it isn't none of us.

John 11:
[SUP]32 [/SUP]When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
[SUP]33 [/SUP]When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. [SUP]34 [/SUP]“Where have you laid him?” he asked.

John 11:44

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes (originally it had said to untie him, and which He was really saying to disconnect from him.) and let him go.”( let him leave and which that had troubled Jesus spirit, for they were thinking that this place was a better place than being with the Father). But patiently he had raised Lazarus, because He know that the people need time to grow, then they will be weeping to be with Him.

Matthew 9:15
Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

I think it depends on your faith and relationship with God. Jesus is our example in all things. He never fought. but there are times when they tried to kill him before his death and the Lord protected him.

I question if there is ever a reason to be violent. those who live by the sword will die by the sword.
God is our protector.

The angel of the lord camp around those that fear God and delivers them.

Defending somebody else...yes.
I'd be less than an infidel if I hid under the sheets while someone tried killing my family for example

1 Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

That comes under 'providing'...protection.
Now I am convinced we do not serve the same God although we read the same Book. This PROVIDE is to provide FOOD and TRUTH. God is my protector as He was Jesus'. If God does not protect me from a slap I will take the slap and turn the other cheek. If God does not protect me from a ebating with sticks I will take that as Paul did. And if God does not protect me from stones, I will be stoned.... And I will NOT fight back. Jesus never did, Paul never did, and Stephen never did. If my or My Lord's kingdom was from here we would have fought, but we do not, because there is NOTHING here worth fighting for. NOTHING!

May the Lord alwys put me in the position to PROVIDE my family with this Truth.... James 4:1... From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

I have no lust in my members, I will not fight. There is no "fight" if there is only one party inflicting pain. Ask Jesus if He defended Himself? He NEVER did, that is why I do not have too... He took ALL my punishment on the cross, and the punishment EVIL men inflicts on me is NOT punishment, but SUFFERINGS FOR HIS NAME... and that is a blessing, not punishment, BLESSING! Even death is a gain! Wow! I truly do understand God's Word now. Thank You Jesus that You reveal scripture to the seekers. Amen!

Peter tried to "defend" Jesus and he chopped the ear off, and Jesus rebuked him for it.

been stabbed, shot at, had bottles thrown at me, people try running me over with car, and the Almighty has always been there protecting me. One time was jumped by a few guys, i was standing with my back to an older couples car at a stop light blocking punches, then they broke out knives, and started swinging those at me, the first cut i felt was next to my eye and i realized they was stabbing me. i shouted you cut me, then the next thing i knew, they was looking up with fear in eyes and took off running, i think they saw a big angel behind me, i don't know, all i seen was the fear in their eyes. Now i wasn't really fighting back just blocking punches and knives, none of the wounds needed stitches, and i didn't need hospital, so i feel i was protected. Now if i seen someone other than me getting stomped or robbed or something, i would try and help protect them, but for me the Father is my defense.

Self defense is a teaching opportunity. Without words. Sometimes those are the best lessons.

Is it overly aggressive and against the bible to teach people something that they don't want to know? Nope. Jesus did it all the time.

Sometimes we need to teach people things they don't want to know. Sometimes its done without words.

If an angry man who is prone to violence is taught not to be violent because it hurts, that could protect someone down the road from injury from that guy. If a thief breaks into a home and intends to harm the people inside if there are people inside, if he gets shot at or stood up to by an armed man, that will probably cause him to give up that lifestyle as too dangerous.

It should be extremely dangerous and ill-advised to attack a man of God, or anyone in his vicinity.

That's my view. Love you...

And they said,
“Look, Lord, here are two swords.”
And he said to them,
It is enough.

Jesus said "Turn the other cheek", Jesus told Peter to put away the sword.

In the new testament the Holy Spirit is our defender. Show me in the new testament where violence against others is taught whether defensively or offensively? Is God incapable of protecting us and keeping us safe from violent attack?

It is the Holy Spirit who is more than able to protect us, if God is for us who can be against us?

This justification of war and self defense is carnal and is not of the Spirit. St Augustine was the first to justify war in the Church in the early 5th century. In 380ad christianity became the only legal religion of the Roman Emipre and christians persecuted those who denied the faith, killing many just as they were once killed by the state, now christians used the state to kill others. This violence against others is not of the Spirit, but is of the flesh. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ never once told us to persecute and kill those who refuse to receive the gospel. This justification of violence against others has continued in the Church to this day and is a false witness of who Jesus Christ is. The world is longing for a loving and forgiving God and violent christians reveal an evil and cruel god to this world.

Just a thought.

I hunted serial killers in Phoenix back on 06. I walked around alone late at night in an area that was a hotspot for the attacks that would happen on the street to people walking alone. God did in fact lead me to them. I didn't know what I would do. I did feel that if I came across them killing someone I would tear them apart, but that isn't what happened. Long story short I (or an angel behind me) scared them, they took off in their car and the killings stopped. I have never had to lay hands on someone in defense for God. However, I have stopped many acts of violence by being there, not being scared and being WILLING TO ENGAGE. I have no carnal desire to hurt anyone, I don't even like watching UFC. I hate violence. God loves me, He loves you and I know He will understand if I am not willing to just sit by while children are frightened to death and tortured or demon-possessed men feel they can just go in a movie theater and open fire. I am trained and I will engage just as I can't stand by and let someone drown. God knows me, if He didn't want me to get involved He would not have put me there.

I would have a much harder time standing before God and explaining why I did nothing. Especially after all of the training He put in my life.
