What is Wormwood according to scripture?

2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
Prophecy is scripture will interpret itself… if you let it.

Rev 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

Rev 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Wormwood is the desire to do away with God’s Law (Old Testament) and follow one’s heart instead.

Prove it? OK.

Jer 9:13 And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law [SUP]H8451/Torah [/SUP]which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

Jer 9:14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

Jer 9:15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

Jer 17:9 "The heart is more deceitful than anything else and mortally sick. Who can fathom it?
Jer 17:10 I, Adonai, search the heart; I test inner motivations; in order to give to everyone what his actions and conduct deserve."

Deu 29:18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;

Deu 29:19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
Deu 29:20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

“Because they have forsaken my Law which I set before them”

This is what God hears the people saying:
“Jesus abolished the Old Testament” “The Old Testament has been done away with.” “You don’t have to obey the law anymore.” “Jesus fulfilled it….Jesus fulfilled it.”
And Jesus said:
Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I did not come to abolish, but to fulfil.

Fulfill
Translated from the Greek word “Pleroo”
Mean to “confirm something”

“That’s the old law.” “Jesus died so we don’t have to.” “We are in the New Covenant.” “We don’t follow those old testament laws.” “Didn’t you read that God doesn’t want us to keep those old laws.” “Are you trying to become a Jew?” “We don’t have to follow ALL of His commandments, just the ten important ones.” “If you follow the law you are cursed by the law.” “Jesus died so we don’t have to.” “I read in the Bible we are not suppose to eat pork….Oh that is Old Testament law and you don’t have to follow that anymore.” “Why is that?” “God changed His mind, that is why He sent us Jesus.” “Aren’t you glad God changed His mind?” “In the Old Testament God wanted us to follow His rules, now He just wants us to accept His Grace, Amen?” “There is no salvation by works.” “Are you trying to earn your salvation like the Pharisees?” “All you need to do is…..” “Just follow His Grace.” “Your not justified by that old law.” “I walked the aisle at my church so I have done all I need to do to be saved.” “I don’t have to keep any of those old testament laws because I know Jesus now.” “Because I know Jesus now.” “The Law was nailed to the cross.” “I know God. He knows me. He knows what is in my heart and that’s all that matters.” “Dear Lord, we pray for your guidance in our lives.” “Dear Lord, please bless us in your son Jesus.” “Father, we just ask that everything we do please you.” Dear God, please bless this food we are about to eat.” “We pray that you lead us and guide us.” THE CELLULAR CUSTOMER YOU ARE TRYING TO REACH IS UNAVAILABLE, PLEASE TRY YOUR CALL AGAIN LATER.”
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Deu 6:25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.

1Pe 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

1Sa 15:29 Moreover, the Eternal One of Isra'el will not lie or change his mind, because he isn't a mere human being subject to changing his mind."

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Jas 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Jas 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Pro 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

“It’s up to us to determine what is right or wrong in our hearts.” “Let your heart lead you.” “I listen to my heart.” “Jesus tells me what to do.” “I don’t need to read the old testament, I trust my heart.”
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Pro 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

“I know what is best for me and that is what God wants me to do.” “I trust my heart.” “I follow my heart and I have a heart for Jesus.” “We don’t need those old laws. Our hearts will tell us what is right.” “It’s the intentions of your heart that matters.” “Let Jesus come into your heart and you will be saved!” “All we need is a personal relationship with Jesus.” “Amen…Hallelujah” “Praise the Lord” “Please don’t forget to leave your donation, it’s tax-free.” “Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, praise the Lord.”
Gen 8:21 …for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth…

Asking Jesus in your heart for Salvation is NEVER mentioned in scripture.

PRESENT WORLD POPULATION: 6.9 BILLION

CHRISTIAN POPULATION: 2.3 BILLION

APPROXIMATELY

33% OR A THIRD OF THE POPULATION

Revelations is curses enacted by God Himself and are things covered in the Torah.
God divorced the House of Israel but His great love for her has made Him go beyond the imagination of any man, including the prophets, who did not know the Great Mystery of the Bridegroom and His Bride of the New (renewed) Covenant, but was only revealed to Paul. The reason He sent His Son ... Mat 15:24 But he (Yeshua) answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (See also Jeremiah 31:31-35 and Hebrews 8:10-13)

Num 5:11-30 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner; And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD: And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is in the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water: And the priest shall set the woman before the LORD, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse: And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causeth the curse: But if thou hast gone aside to another instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee beside thine husband: Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell; And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water: And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causeth the curse: and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter. Then the priest shall take the jealousy offering out of the woman's hand, and shall wave the offering before the LORD, and offer it upon the altar: And the priest shall take an handful of the offering, even the memorial thereof, and burn it upon the altar, and afterward shall cause the woman to drink the water. And when he hath made her to drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse among her people. And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed. This is the law of jealousies, when a wife goeth aside to another instead of her husband, and is defiled; Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall execute upon her all this law.

In the Old Testament under the Law (Torah) certain crimes required the penalty of stoning. In Revelations we see God doing the stoning.

Rev 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

What are the broken laws of Torah that justify being stoned?

Breaking the Sabbath. And committing adultery.

Num 15:32-35 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. 33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. 34 And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
Num 15:35 And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.

(Mat 5:19) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

(Mat 19:17) And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

(Mar 12:29) And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

(Joh 14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

(Joh 14:21) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

(Joh 15:10) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

(1Co 7:19) Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

(1Co 14:37) If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

(Eph 2:15) Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

(Col 2:22) Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men?

(Col 4:10) Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him

(1Th 4:2) For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

(Tit 1:14) Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

(1Jn 2:3) And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

(1Jn 2:4) He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

(1Jn 3:22) And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

(1Jn 3:24) And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

(1Jn 5:2) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

(1Jn 5:3) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

(2Jn 1:6) And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

(Rev 12:17) And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

(Rev 14:12) Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

(Rev 22:14) Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
Rev 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
Rev 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
Rev 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Interesting interpretation. The connecting logic is not very strong though. We can work on that.

The strongest argument you have is the test for adultery found in Numbers 5, connected to the prophecy in Jeremiah 9. It shows the connection between the judgement of bitter water and adultery. After that, we need to rework your connection between adultery and "following your heart". I do think you have a very valid point: God is jealous for His people, and when we turn from Him and follow the ways of the world, we are committing adultery against Him. Now let's find some Scripture to back that up.

If you finish the whole chapter of Jeremiah 9, I think your conclusion will change. Jeremiah 9 ends with explaining why the judgement of wormwood is given, and explains what spiritual adultery is:

(Authorized KJV) Jeremiah 9:25 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.

This describes the punishment as being against those who do not follow the Law, and against those who follow the letter of the Law, but not in their "heart".
Following the Law is not enough. That is where love comes in. There is so much application that can be made from the passages that you have connected together. As for the "following your heart" comment, you will need to rephase, because having the "heart" of the Law, which is love, is the only way of escaping the judgement symbolized by Wormwood.

This actually described what happened at Christ's resurrection. In the absence of love, knowledge of good and evil are known.

You will need to clarify.
There was no judgement of all the world on the day Jesus rose from the dead.
Also, there is still knowledge of good and evil in the presence of love.... Am I just misunderstanding you?

Did not Christ say upon His death that NOW was the judgement and NOW is satan cast out?

We are judged sinners. We will only live (not collect on wages of sin) when we do away with sin.

We will only do away with sin when we learn to love one another.

I was re-reading Deuteronomy 29 for context. The word "imagination" used in the Authorized King James, in verse 19, is not meant in the same way the we use that word today. The word was supposed to denote stubbornness. It is not meaning the "vain fantasy of their own heart", but the "hardness of their hearts".

I hope your argument against "following your heart" was not founded on this verse... because verse 19 has nothing to do with making decisions based on a whim, and everything to do with being unwilling to change your ways.

sounds like you need the Gospel.
The only Way is through Christ. It is by trust in Christ alone that we are saved. Not by works.
The things of Christ that we must trust in are: Jesus died for our sins, and rose from the dead.
If you add anything to that, then you are not trusting in Christ, but upon your ability to remove sin from your life.
You would be saying that Jesus did nothing when He died, because God made it clear in the OT that those who were sinless would not be judged. Jesus made it so that God views everyone, and anyone, who calls on His Name to be sinless before God.

I have it. The good news that Christ will save all men.

She is correct. Whether you call it stubborness or imagination, it is the same spirit of error.

We have enough for all but we are fighting to hold on to a dead system we made.

I'm not seeing the connections. What do you mean by "we have enough for all"? I need a noun to understand what we have enough of.
Also, what is this "dead system"? The Mosaic Law? If so, then I agree with you... but we did not make that system, God did.
By "Christ will save all men" do you mean that everyone will enter the Kingdom?

Sorry if I am annoying you by asking so many questions, but I crave clarity.

We have the man power, the intelligence, the resources and the technology to house, clothe, feed and provide the best life for all of mankind FREELY.

But we are too busy worrying about falling off a "fiscal cliff" (imaginary) while many starve everyday. If we know that the end of whatever we do is death, then let us do sonething new!

Instead of warring with other countries, simply give them what they need. In turn we will be free to partake of their resources. We help one another.

John 12:31-33

31*Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32*And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33*This he said, signifying what death he should die.

Oh, so you were derailing this Bible related thread to promote your political agenda. no problem.
This had been a thread about the 3rd trumpet in Revelation 8, but I guess you thought it was a perfect place to talk about the social gospel.

What I say is biblical. I talk about doing away with politics and I'm political? The overspreading of abominatuons happened at Christ's death. Again the prince of this world was cast out. Although we (christians have the truth, it is mixed with error or wormwood.

For example, if Jesus is God, then why is He paying bills? That is God based upon a system of man.

Back to the OP:
If you take the Wormwood judgement literally, then there will be an event that will kill many people who claim to be in Christ, but are fake, having the expression of holiness but lacking the spirit.
If it is a metaphor, then it is still speaking against living with a Christian facade, but lacking spirituality.
Either way, it applies to those who preach any gospel other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This judgement is against those who preach the prosperity gospel, the works+faith gospel, and the social gospel.

Oh great, now this song is going to be in my head all day... :p

Sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet, sound the trumpet!
Sound, sound, sound the trumpet till around
You make the list'ning shores rebound.
On the sprightly hautboy play
All the instruments of joy
That skillful numbers can employ,
To celebrate the glories of this day!

What is Wormwood according to scripture?

2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
Prophecy is scripture will interpret itself… if you let it.

Rev 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

Rev 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Wormwood is the desire to do away with God’s Law (Old Testament) and follow one’s heart instead.

Prove it? OK.

Jer 9:13 And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law [SUP]H8451/Torah [/SUP]which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

Deu 29:18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;

And Jesus said:
Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I did not come to abolish, but to fulfil.

Fulfill
