Your little buddy here could have had a tough winter and is looking for the sweet sap underneath. The high sugar content will give him a burst of energy.

hey, Phil, we have SO many of those pesky little rodents here.

they do strip trees of bark, which ain't good for the trees.

luckily, we have more trees than squirrels.... so far :)

Also maybe looking for water or just finds it entertaining. If it was spring it would make more sense that this squirrel is pregnant, sometimes chewing the bark is their way of dealing with the pain. All theories though, can't be sure.

Okay, I have a puzzle I would like someone to solve for me. Noticed a bunch of wood chips under one of my trees yesterday and looked up to see a squirrel chewing the bark off a branch. I got to looking and there are about a half dozen branches that are missing a lot of their bark.
Worked in the yard today and he was at it again. Fearless little guy today. I got the camera and he posed for me. He is hanging by his back feet from a branch while he eats the bark in one pic, and sitting on top of it the next.
I have never seen or heard of a squirrel doing this. Anyone else ever see such a thing?

Why do squirrels eat tree bark?

Best Answer: They strip bark off certain trees to get to the tender cambium layer, which they eat. The theories about pregnant females and searching for water, are just that, theories. Squirrels will strip bark even during wet, rainy weather. And yes, they have been known to kill trees. Porcupines are even worse, since cambium bark is one of their main sources of food. _- original post by Hondu..

You mentioned porcupines and I just felt the need to share this lol. My mom and I are huge animal lovers and will sometimes do very unreasonable things to save an animals life. When I was very young my mom saw an animal crossing the road, it was badly injured. She took the shovel from the trunk scooped the porcupine up and put it safely near the woods. Let's just say she went to the hospital with plenty of quills in her... Ouch.

The wife said the beavers are back in our pond.
I have to get out of here and take care of them.
A neighbor, will come and get them, he then has
beaver stew. To me, a beaver is nothing but a
giant rat. No way I could eat that thing.

I plan on reading when I go to my window and stare
out at the harbor. It brings me peace sitting there.
Who knows, I may get to see another super ship
tonight.

the kids refer to their dad and mom as 'the oldies'.

we're big into teasing, but not in a malicious way.

Mark tells me i'm tired and it's bedtime.
how does he always know these things?

good night... see you in a few hours, Frank. :)
