Prayed a blessing over the foreman of a construction crew putting in my new sidewalk, this morning he and his bride are back, you must cut concrete of it will crack where you don't want it to crack, so I got to share Holy Spirit blessing over the couple this morning. God is so good. What a wonderful way to start this day of worship.

Now I have to "keep going all day" - without sleeping - until tonight, when I will no-doubt sleep really well...

Actually it requires some kind of steel.... like rebar or hog wire fencing to take the stress of expansion and contraction of hot and cold weather off the concrete. Expansion joints are for huge huge slabs of concrete and where it will connect two structurally separate pieces subject to different temperatures. IE ground vs collum.

Yes - I have seen both used (one and/or the other) - along with expansion joints every-so-many (usually a few) sections. At the other section barriers, a partial thin shallow slot - not a cut, more like a score line - formed at some point while the concrete is drying. Something like that - best I remember.

Yeah...those are for drainage and mitigating surface, shallow cracks that tend to destroy the finish of the concrete with chips coming out. Not exactly a true "expansion joint."
They only work if the bed for the concrete is done sufficiently. (Usually crushed limestone) some places will have 2" and some I've seen up to 8" for heavy equipment.
