The commentator lost me at, "If I were the devil..."
We are crucified with Christ, it is no longer we who live but Christ Who lives is us. As much as some people would like to play devil's advocate, Jesus didn't play that. We walk in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. We walk in the faith of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, "Come, follow Me." The Lord wants our eyes focused on Him alone.
Isaiah said, "For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded:
therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed." Isaiah wasn't taking his focus off the LORD.
King David said in Psalms, "To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens!"
And in Proverbs it reads, "Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil."
Nowhere does the LORD tell us to focus on the devil. It does say be careful that you don't listen to his voice or believe his lies. That's it. The angels didn't play devil's advocate and they didn't dialogue with the devil either. The Bible said they just say, "The LORD rebuke you." That's it.
Jesus said, "Get behind me, Satan." or "Get out of that person, unclean spirit." And that was the end of it. No other dialogue and no other commentary.
