I just wanted to point it out so the OP could see what some of the CC posters thought. most won't feel like repeating themselves since there are about 700 posts on the subject already.

not stopping anyone from posting,

just if you want a wider survey, i'd read the threads to see what members think of the subject.

Nautilus, being slain in the spirit is not nonsense. I went to an all night prayer meeting for a guy with brain cancer at my church at the morning service we were having worship and people were praying with each other...a couple in the church came up behind me and were praying, well I wasn't expecting it at all but I was slain in the spirit. All my physical strength was absent at that time and the couple that was praying over me knelt down beside me and were saying over and over In Jesus name, in Jesus name as they prayed. It was definitely the power of the Holy Ghost no other explanation! I should add the guy with brain cancer was told he would live 16 months...he went back and had an MRI...He's healed...he too was slain in the spirit during that service. :)

eh all i know is what ive seen. And i was at a church where they all started talking in 'tongues' basically on command and then at the end during a song the pastor started laying hands on people one by one and they got 'slain in the spirit'. He came over to me and the friend of mine who brought me, does it to my friend, then puts his hand on my forehead. I literally felt nothing bbut a hand. hence when i decided that some people are fakers...if it had been one or two then fine maybe id give it some credit but a whole congregation...nah

I agree with you there are churches out there who do fake this stuff, for what purpose I'm not sure. In my experience no pastor even came and put his hand on me, only the people who were praying behind me. I just know it does happen for real because I've experienced it but do agree with not all churches or people have genuine experiences. Like I think a lot of those on tv where every person in the whole line falls to the ground when the pastor touches them...personally, don't really think that's legit.

The only true tongues are the tongues of nations given at Pentacost. A pentacostal ministers wife told my wife when we visted to fall back when she was touched on the head but my wife didnt listen to her. Read the history of the modern pentacostal church. Over a hundred years ago at a meeting a young girl was caught babbling at the back. The minister heard this and declared it a miracle and it spread. Mass delusional hypnotic hysteria flamed by loud music and ministers talking over the top.

I have linked to this study before, but thought it worthwhile putting a link to it again, as it is clear that many Christians are completely ignorant of them and their usage: the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit (1Cor 12v7-11), see Here, there is also a good section on the gift of tongues.

Yahweh Shalom...

I was a bit of a skeptic on this issue until recently.I have been studying and praying about the topic, and like many have seen some folks that look like they are playing a part rather than speaking in tongues.

I came across the 4 types of tongues in the bible and it all seems to be logical. Here's a quoted post from another member:

Of the four that the New Testament talks about, two are public, and two are private.

the two public ones:

- tongues as a sign to the unbeliever
1 conrinthians 13:22 'therefore tongues is a sign, not to those who believe but to the unbelievers'
this occurs in Acts 2.

Tongues as a sign to the unbeliever occurs when the holy spirit transcends our intellect empowering us to speak, preach, or teach in any language of this earth, of which we have not had any previous experience.
this only happens when the holy spirit wills.

- tongues for interpretation.

1 conrithians 14:5 "I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,c]" class="footnote">[c] but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,d]" class="footnote">[d] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. "
This is one of the nine gifts of the spirit. That is where we are in a public assembly, and the spirit of God comes upon a person and they begin to speak in a heavenly language, and paul says THAT must be interpreted. <--- that is the tongues to which paul refers to in the end of corinthians 12.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the two private

-tongues for intercession.
Romans 8:26-28.
'and the holy spirit helps us in our distress, for we don't even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. but the holy spirit prays for us in groanings which cannot be expressed in words and the father who knows all hearts knows what the spirit is saying for the spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will
John bevere goes on to explain that this type of tongues actually goes beyond tongues and into actual groaning.
he says that this type of tongue has been lost in the church. I quote him "i was out praying this morning and it hit me this morning, i was praying ; God had me interceding over a situation and i was praying over it, and it got to the point beyond tongues and i just had this urge.. and i had to begin to groand.. and listen, the power that is released when you begin to enter into that kind of intercession is just mind-boggling."

- Tongues for personal prayer, which result in personal edification.
1 corinthians 14:4 'he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself/herself.'
for that reason, paul says (verse 14)
'For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. '
Jude 20 But you, beloved build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
"when praying in tongue, we build ourselves up, we edify ourselves"
the word edify means 'edifus', which means to build a structure.
the word edify is derived from edifus' which means to build a massive magnificant building, so when you pray in tongues, your actually errecting a superstructure, a devine operation inside of you to begin to house the presence and power of God.

I witnessed this happen in a prayer meeting and it really did blow me away. As a believer I watched someone speak in tongues for the first time and it brought FAITH and THE HOLY SPIRIT directly to the forefront of my world and surely everyone's world who witnessed it. I haven't received the gift but I hope to. I won't let it hinder my quest for Christ regardless if I do or do not receive it....

There is a lot of confusion about types of tongues, most people seem to think its only one type, where you speak something and another person understands it in thie language, yes that type can exist, but i have never witnessed it myself. However, the so called Holy Spirit Language, is what you hear most people speaking today. I do it myslef, and like others I enjoy singing in it.

This is direct via another spirit interacting with your own. Cut a long story short, after I found out I had this, I had it tested by someone who had various spiritual discernment gifts and it was from Holy SPirit and not another spirit. Kundalini spirit for example, as we see being mentioned on Benny Hinn thread.

Most of time it is obvious when I hear people faking it, or its a false Spirit, theres something cant really describe or put into words, but you just know its fake, rather like someone who works in a bank who can spot a fake note instantly.

Luke 11:13 "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him."
