What does it mean to worship God in spirit and truth? What is the difference between the 2?

1 peter 1:22 seeing that you purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that you love one another with a pure heart fervently.

truth=Word
Spirit=Promise

how I believe it correlates:
"seeing that you purified your souls in obeying the Word through the Promise unto unfeigned love of the brethren."

ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

promise brings faith.

In Spirit = through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, His love and grace, growing in the Fruits therein

Galatians 5:22-24
New King James Version (NKJV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

In Truth = discerning between Good and Evil by rightly dividing His words and your life experience to know the TRUE will of God for yourself and this world, discerning between the spirits and the words of people, growing in Wisdom

Hebrews 5:12-14
New King James Version (NKJV)

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Do you know how to use your sword?

I believe that the text which says to worship God in spirit and truth it is talking about the internal and external experience.
The Pharisees only had the external but, not the internal.

Matthew 23:25-27
(25) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
(26) Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
(27) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

When a couple loves each other why do they need to be married? Shouldn't their love be enough? Marriage is an outward expression of what is within.

Baptism is the same, it is an outward expression that a person has repented within.

Some have said that Jesus is my sabbath He gives me rest, that is good He also is my rest but, if He is our sabbath it will be expressed in keeping His sabbath

when people pray in tongues to God it is for the feeding of the soul and the edification of the man. when the person prophecies it is for the edification of the hearers and for the glory of God so that people might repent of their sins and believe the promises of God's love and redemption through obedience and submission fully to the Lordship of Christ.

so I can see what you are saying about the outward and the inward showing of faith. However I think both outward and inward worship should have both Spirit and Truth manifested in them.
