since there are a few threads going on right now about various 'spirits'...some of which include notions and names of spirits that do not seem to be biblically based...i decided to do a bible search for the term 'spirit' and see what came up...and then narrow the list down to just the spirits of the kind being discussed in those threads...

the following list includes all of the negative spirits that are actually mentioned in the bible...i have primarily relied on the new american standard bible...but in some cases i have included the name of the spirit as given in more than one bible translation when a more familiar name is used...

spirit of jealousy
spirit of confusion or spirit of distortion
spirit of stupor or spirit of slumber or spirit of deep sleep
spirit of despair or spirit of fainting
spirit of harlotry
spirit of divination
spirit of slavery
spirit of partiality
spirit of fear or spirit of timidity
spirit of the antichrist
spirit of error
evil spirit
deceiving spirit
haughty spirit
unclean spirit
deaf and mute spirit
the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience
deceitful spirit

maybe it would be interesting to try to define each of these spirits from their biblical context...

Apollyon, Abaddon...
it wasn't my intent to include the proper names of demons in my list...just the more generic 'spirits of' negative things...feel free to add a complete list of demonic proper names if you want...

In my opinion, Depression, fear, etc are the proper names of some demons. The very first demon i encountered said his name was depression.

In my opinion. There some attributes that you have listed that must be separated or at least looked at differently. Some, if not most of the spirits in your list, are attributes of the flesh (human nature). I could better explain this way. In our modern english tongue, we describe some of these as a bad attitude. Such as "the spirit of jealousy". It is our human nature, we at times become jealous. However, at the same time, if that jealousy is not curbed by the Holy Spirit. Then, it can become bondage. I know we often think of bondage as drugs, alcohol, pornography. adultery and so on. But, hate, anger, bribery, glutinous, and so on can be bondage as well. When it becomes bondage, then it is enforced by "evil" or "unclean" spirits. Meaning the person has no choice, they are bond and cannot stop. Please understand that this is oppression and not possession. A true christian can be bound but not possessed.

Due to fall of man and being in a depraved state, these attitudes come natural to us. Which is why we need the Cross and the Holy Spirit to help us in producing Good fruit.

So what I am getting at is this. Our attitude (spirit) if left unchecked by the Holy Spirit. Then evil spirits bind us to it.

I hope I am making sense.

Spirit,Spirit,Spirit.
News folks, there are only two directing spirits.
Yes, it's hard to believe.
Only two.
Spirit this, spirit that......
The body and soul rely on one directing spirit or the other.
All spirits follow except two.

why does this matter when they have no authority at all, because Jesus conquered them with Love...
WE SHOULD DO THE SAME. stop giving the spirits such honor... really, giving them names and jobs?

we should distinguish the word spirit when its talking about a certain disposition
from demons and fallen angels.....if not it leads to misunderstandings and superstitions.

This is why.

  • Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

It is not pie in the sky, but battle my friends. We are in the ARMY of God. Armies are for one thing and that is battle. Guess what, if we hold fast to the high calling of Christ, we personally win. with our faith solely in the work of the cross. It is the cross that defends us from these spirits. Unfortunately, we often to take our eyes off the cross and place them on our own abilities. Rest assured when we do this these spirits rush in and if left unchecked bondage awaits.

Back to my crazy theory, these are "spirits" of delusions...so maybe...these are actually different names for the "the spirit of sin"

to have a spirit of something does not mean demons but a principle
or a disposition of something. misunderstanding come in when people
say when the verse says spirit it means a demon. Im not saying there
are no demons...just that it causes tons of problem thinking when you
interpret spirit to mean demons when thats not what it means

The word is literally 'breath' or 'wind'.
'Pneuma'.
There is no greek word for 'spirit'.

This is why Jesus said "the wind bloweth were it listeth";
..."yet ye must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven."- - the religious scholar He was talking to didn't get it.
"Are you a ruler in Israel? And yet you don't know a man must be born of the 'Pneuma'?"- ( breath of God)

I said it before and now I'll repeat it, there are two breaths, (and only two).

Mr. Shafer. Unto which spirit are we born. You are correct. there is only God and there is satan. Which do we fight daily. which seeks to bind us and which seeks to give us liberty. You have left out one important fact. The freewill of human nature. When we are born, and born into sin, It is our nature to rebel against God and follow our flesh father. Every attribute of God goes against our human nature.

The only, and I mean only, way we can even to attempt to be like Adam before the fall, is by placing our faith in the work of Jesus Christ at the Cross. This is the only thing that God will accept. Now, when we, as we often do, remove our faith from that Holy Sacrifice and place it in our own ability. God has no choice but to turn His face from us. We are own our own That's when these evil spirits, under the leadership of satan attack. I believe I have spoken truth. Correct me if I am wrong.

The fall was addressed I thought. The unregenerate soul of man follows the spirit of Lucifer.
God never turns His face from us, any turning is done by us. - "There is no shadow of turning in Him".
Other than those two small details, you are absolutely right Kerry, well done!:)

Ahhh, Mr. Shafer you have pointed out a flaw in my post. Thank you. You are correct, God never turns His face from us. He shall never leave us nor forsake. True dat. However if we take our face off of His face and I say His face is the cross. I will repeat my comment, we are left to our own abilities, which is lunch for our enemy. Now, if we return to the Cross, grace abounds and we are accepted under the sacrifice that Christ gave us. His perfect church is under the grace that His sacrifice gave us. This free gift and these spirit mentioned have no right over us as long as our eyes are focused on Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
