So why do you think that Jesus told the disciples to buy a sword (Luke 22:36-38) but later rebuked Peter for using it (Matthew 26:51-52; John 18:10)?

I must admit this one has me totally confounded, any ideas?

I don’t think the Lord wanted to force his will on people. Instead, he chose to be an example-setter.

At the same time, we have the right to protect ourselves, and those that need our help, I think.

Christ was trying to make his deciples realize that his kingdom was not to be one that is forced on anyone. That is called dominion...theology.

Luke 12:39; tells us we have a responsiblity to protect and defend those around us and ourselves.

"And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through." (Matthew 24:43)

It has something to do with fulfillment of prophecy:

37 "For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment."

Nothing to do with actually using the sword.

Christ IS the Sword of Truth, so naturally they would have no need of searching for his recorded words, as they had those words with them and heard them first hand by the Master himself.

The Truth has Never been for sale, but in the times were living in, where virtually nothing material wise is free, we have no choice but to purchase these words of Truth.

However, once you are given the understanding of these words through study, prayer, the Holy Spirit and sharing; then you should NEVER attempt to add to these words, through writing a book about it and giving your opinion :p

ANYBODY that earnstly desires to know the Truth, at this time (after the blindness) can hear them themselves, by following the above instructions from Christ.

However this is not the only way to be saved; You can keep yourself under the Law and just protect your faith (beleif), not with full understanding and pay paticular attention to your behaviour, as you will be held accountable

So the Doubled Edged Sword of Gods Truth IS; one side of it cuts through ALL of the religious differences; the other side of that sword disproves ALL of theories, philosophies and scientific explanations as to where yours and everybodys elses intellect originated from, Our Heritage, Love and Wisdom.(the point of The Sword)

Lest you start to beleive that your Heritage is of this world :(

Sorry that i have to add this to this post, but their is a VERY annoying individual on this site, that greatly hampers the sharing of truth. So NO this IS NOT my theory, just what i have understood from those words of truth, through study, prayer, The Holy Spirit and sharing.

I Pray that this is not confusing, as this is not what i'm attempting to do in anyway.

Forever in Christ :)

[/QUOTE]Peter never walked around with a sword, but Jesus told them to buy one so that the scripture would be fulfilled - Peter cutting of the ear of the soldier, so Jesus could heal him.

Thanks for all the answers given me, some new things to ponder on. MaggieMye, I heard that view on another forum, still having a little troube getting a understanding on it, but I will have to look into it.

WeStand if I understand you right, I been kinda thinking like that a little, but for some reason having trouble getting a total connection on God's Word being the Sword, that Jesus is telling His disciples to purchase.

i believe that peter cutting off the guys ear he was in essence taking on the whole lot of them..all the guards, troops that came down to them..if not for God they surley would have killed peter dead.. and Jesus was saying if your going to do that prepare to die yourself..like a saying.....secondly i believe the rebuke was because it was an attempt to stop what had to happen that the Son would be arressted and falseley condemned and crucified.. Kinda two fold thing going on..

As for the purchasing of swords i believe it was because they were being sent out..and out into the Judean hills where history shows was full of highwaymen, robbers... if it was just to supply peter with a sword to fullfill prophecy then only peter would have been told to go buy one..all of them were told to go get one..and it was a sword it wasnt for cleaning fish or widdling wooden flutes..it was for defense..

anyhow hopefully some food for thought as you study..Gbu

Jesus saw that they had two swords and said that is enough..i see what was said that whats being talked about would be the upcoming event of His capture and that is true..definatley refering to the prohecies.. if Jesus had said that one was enough then i could see that it only refered to the upcoming event of His capture but Jesus saying two swords would be enough i believe means more..the sword in their hands would be for defense as they were not exactly going to be mercinaries or anything..

anyhow a little more to add to your study....it is an excellent question....Gbu

Hi Forgiven66; If i understand this right, from my studies, i beleive that we are ALL disciples of Christ, that practice following his ways. When i was studying, i personally found it interesting that the prime root meaning of the word disciple is, home-educated.

Now although the Apostles were disciples also, i beleive that they received the tittle as an Apostle, as they were the privalged ones, that got to spend time with him and ask him first hand their questions, to be used, to move Christs Ministry forward

The answers they received are recorded in the Gosples, These answers are sufficent as; though in todays world i'm sure our questions would be likely be much different, do to our aquired knowledge and technologies, the reality of things are, that there is nothing new under the sun.

All thats happened is, that God dumped out the toy sack of education, and allowed all these really cool and mind intriquiging toys to be built through mankind.

Since the beggining of flesh time, the basics have always remained the same, food, shelter, hygiene and protection from boneheads who prefer to take, rather than contribute; thus the neccessity of war.

God said as it was in the begining, So shall it be at the end, and from my studies, i know he means it. But its all soooo cool; It will ALL end in HIS WILL, with nobody hurting anybody :D He is the Spirit of Love after all.

So in essence, in the book of Daniel, you can read about the king of Bablyon (Babylon = Confusion) at the height of the deveolped kingdom. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, who was really a good person, as he treated people fairly, and was blessed by God for being this way, though he was not a part of Isreal.

But God knew that ultimetly the real king of Babylon (satan) would take him down, which is why he sent Daniel.

It was the moment that Nebuchadnezzer, proclaimed throughout all the kingdom, that HE was to be worshipped by the subjects, for all that HE had accomplished and for being the good person that HE was; No credit given to God, consumed in self pride, or you could say satanized ;) that God drops the hammer on him.

Now its the same situation, all these wonderful technologies, toys, education, and knowledge, All made from man ??? or through man ???

Sorry about the ramble  i'll be quicker reguarding the sword.

Though i'm sure there are a few places where you can look up in the Bible, that Gods Truth is a Sword, i don't have the gift of remembering where they all are, off the top of my head, but i did look up one for you.

REV: CH 19; 13-16 And he was clothed in a vesture dipped in blood, and his name is called The Word of God.

And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

I also understand what Journey41 was reffering to as well; but i beleive Christ was speaking propheticly in both senses; as the Apostles already had 2 physical swords handy (God always provides) to fufill prophecy in reguards to the coming arrest; but i beleive, this was propheticly for us in a spiritual sense.

Hope this helps a bit.

Forever in Christ :)

I thought of a scripture that may help pull together the above thought, as i realize i'm only highlighting a very indepth story.

HEBREWS: CH4; 11-12

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbeleif.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart

I've wondered about the sword too.
Gods Truth will be so embarrassingly simple, that ALL Ego's, will Faint in the embbarrasment of the moment, on their knees trembling in shame and embarrasment.

The rest of us who are expecting the return of our heritage, Love and Wisdon, will be SO releived, that we will faint to our knees in Overwhelming Excitment, Joy, Hounor, Glory and Praise, Forever and Ever, Thats That (amen)

Its not Just Beleiving in Christ; You have to beleive in Miricles, or Gods Word could not be Beleived, in all Sincerity.

Forever in Christ :)

I wonder when Jesus allowed them to use that sword the bought in Luke 22: 36-38? I think we should look at it in context. They are to get ready to spread the news of Jesus death and resurrection because Jesus will no longer be physically among them. before they had no need of anything, but now they are to get ready: moneybag, knapsack and sword. but they only had two swords and Jesus said that would be enough. What did He mean by "For the things concerning Me have an end."?
what things would that be? the miracles? the torment? the prophecies?

Luke 22:35-38 (New King James Version)

Supplies for the Road

35 And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’[a] For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.

Hi AnandaHya; I don't think it could be the end of any of these, as He's still prophosyed to return, there is still much torrment in the world, and as far as miricles go, well i beleive in both miricles and divine intervention. In my opinion, i feel He's currently operating on the latter when needed, as far as miricles go, i think its just the calm before the storm. (no pun intended)

The Bible stories are physical examples mostly, for us to learn by, so we don't make these errors, in the final generation of deception.

Those 10 morenatural miricles of the OT, that freed the people out of bondage, are only natural physical miricles, to prepare us mentally for the phenominal deception, that is coming our way, with very strong delusion, on a set of 10 spiritually morenatural miricles, that will be performed by none other than the pretty boy liar himself, in all his splendid glory, to deceive if it were possible, even Gods set aside ones.(elect) gotta keep that ego in check :D

My opinion of what he meant when he said, it is enough; is all He needed was one sword not two, for the event which was to take place; as to why He let them do it, To me it was to highlight that mankind never gets it right; He healed the soldiers ear, to show us that Gods way, is not mans way, and that in reality, God NEVER wanted anybody hurting anyone, physically or spiritually.

As far as things coming to an end concerning him, well thats reguarding his time to finish Our Fathers duty in the flesh; God always moves forward, though he sure can change the pace of things huh ? :)

Forever in Christ

Westand, perhaps you will like this verse:
And take the helmet of salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:17
Still uncertain but been musing on this issue some. Thanks again for all the information everyone.
