So does atonement mean the same in both testaments because I see it’s mentioned in Romans?
As you mentioned, in the OT, "God accepted the sacrifice of the High Priest for the people and they were covered until the next Yom Kippor".

As shown in Hebrews 9, the OT sacrifices and the holy places made with hands were figures of the true (Heb 9:24):

Hebrews 9:

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient to cover the sins of the whole world ... all descendants of Adam ... however, if one chooses another way, his or her sins are not covered. There is no other sacrifice acceptable to God.

Hebrews 10:28 gives warning to those who despise God's provision:

Hebrews 10:

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

God has provided all that is needed ... those who reject what God has so graciously provided will receive the consequence of their decision.

... not sure if this answers your question ...

I appreciate the reply. And I agree that those who reject Jesus Christ are not covered because they have rejected the greatest gift that was ever given to mankind. And yes there are consequences for every decision one makes and because God gave man a free will one can choose how they will spend eternity. I was just interested in the use of the word atonement in both testaments and if it has the same meaning in the Hebrew and the Greek. Or is the day of atonement, even though it was practiced yearly just symbolic of what would be the real thing when Jesus was crucified?

Christ's Death effects our Repentance towards God !2

The word for repented in Jer 31:19 nacham means to be sorry, be sorry, rue, suffer grief, repent, of one's own doings , to be sorry, i.e. (in a favorable sense)

Its being made sorry for our wrong doings in a favorable sense, like for instance, when Paul wrote to the Corinthians 2 Cor 7:9-11

9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

And please notice in Vs 9 "for ye were made sorry after a godly manner"

Being made sorry is in the passive voice, its something that was wrought in them ! See Isa 26:12 !

They were made sorry for wrongdoing by the Power and Grace of God working in them, which sorrow workth repentance to Salvation or conversion, Note: Conversion is a kind of Salvation. This was Illustrated on the Day of Pentecost, How that the Risen Christ poured out His Spirit and Grace on that multitude, and it caused them to show forth the fruit of Godly Sorrow repentance for what they had done Acts 2:37-38 !

So repentance is the fruit and effect of the death of Christ. So when Peter later writes in his epistle about all coming to repentance 2 Pet 3:9

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Hes merely stating in light of what appears to be a delay in Christ's Second Coming, its no delay at all, for God's Purpose has allowed for the passage of time in order for the full number of the elect, from generation to generation, until the end of the world, that the full number come under the turning effects of the death of Christ, such turning brings about their repentance unto Salvation, 2 Cor 7:10; 2 Pet 3:15 ! 43

Or is the day of atonement, even though it was practiced yearly just symbolic of what would be the real thing when Jesus was crucified?
I don't believe the Day of Atonement was "just symbolic" as there were serious consequences if someone did not participate ... or if someone participated by rote without considering God's purpose in establishing the holy day.

All the feast days and offerings established by God are fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ and all point to Him as Messiah.

God has made abundantly clear that He has established His way and if mankind rejects God's way, that person (or those people) will receive the consequence of their rejection.

On the other hand, the whosoevers that come to Him as He has stated, they will receive the blessings God promises.

Hebrews 9:

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

i am not saying that, I just don't fully comprehend the expansion that is being presented but do appreciate you and I do read the posts. still reading and learning. thank you,,,

i jumped in too quickly and was a little off topic. please accept my sincere apology

And please notice in Vs 9 "for ye were made sorry after a godly manner"

Being made sorry is in the passive voice, its something that was wrought in them !
 ... read the verse before verse 9, brightfame52, and you'll see what made them sorry:

2 Corinthians 7:8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.

Paul had written a letter which made the believers at Corinth feel bad for their sin, and Paul had written in a godly manner, according to Scripture. He used the truth. He was honest. He simply told the truth in love.

And the response of the believers was true repentance ... godly sorrow:

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Paul had chastened the believers and they repented because they sorrowed after a godly manner.

There is a difference between godly sorrow which results in a turning away from behavior that is not approved by God and the sorrow of the world which does not result in a change in behavior.

Whatever letter Paul refers to in verse 8 resulted in the believers repenting ... turning from the behavior in which they were being reproved by Paul.

Christ's Death effects our Repentance towards God !3

Something else is seen in our text from Jer 31:18-19

18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

Christ's death ensures our instruction, or chastening of the Lord, our discipline !

All for whom Christ died are Sons, for He tasted death for every Son Heb 2:9-10

9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

As Sons we all shall be instructed into the ways of Salvation, we inherit a Spiritual education which teaches us our need for Christ and His Righteousness which He has already provided for us. This is why Jesus says these words Jn 6:44-45

44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man or son therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

The every man here are Sons, that's why Jesus says they have learned of the Father. Also Jesus says that it has been written in the prophets about this matter, lets read where in the Prophets Isa 54:13

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

That word children is the word ben and means Sons ! And the word taught can be rendered instructed !

All thy Sons shall be instructed, this is what Jesus means in Jn 6:44-45, which is for every Son Christ died for.

This spiritual education and learning is what every Son must go through Heb 12:5-13

5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

All those God Loves are His Sons and He chastens them Vs 6, and this chastening begins our spiritual education. The word chasten paideuó
means :

I discipline, educate, train, (b) more severely: I chastise.

Now this is what the Prophet means in Jer 31:19

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

God brings all His Sons to this point, to smote upon their thigh, and saying denoting their acute awareness of their sinfulness and pollution before God, results in a godly sorrow for sin !

Remember the Lords words in Lk 18:13-14

13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Notice how he smote upon his breast [similar to jeremiah] saying " God be merciful to me a sinner"

Its no doubt therefore he was a Son who had to be chastened, instructed of his sinfulness, and we see the fruit of such instruction, Looking to God for Mercy, Propitiation which is through Christ !

Christ's Covenant Death shall produce this reaction or a very similar one for everyone He died for, guaranteed ! Because if they are Sons its ensured, and they are Sons if God Loved them Heb 12:6

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receivet

The Same God and Love as in Jn 3:16, the World of His Sons !

Sanctified by His Death !

Heb 10:10

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

And in accordance with this will [of God], we have been made holy (consecrated and sanctified) through the offering made once for all of the body of Jesus Christ (the Anointed One).AMP

All for whom Christ died, The meaning of the words " the offering of the body of Jesus Christ ", are by it Sanctified, set apart, once and for all, which produces results into their present and future ! The word sanctified here is the greek word hagiazō:

I.to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow

II.to separate from profane things and dedicate to God

A.consecrate things to God

B.dedicate people to God

III.to purify

A.to cleanse externally

B.to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin

C.to purify internally by renewing of the soul

Now to do this, to make or render Holy, to purify internally entails a the making of a new creation, a new man Created Eph 4:24

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

This New Man must be Created to render True that Christ's death sanctified us, or its not a reliable Truth, its a lie ! Thats right, Heb 10:10 would be a lie.

The word created ktizō means to form, shape, make

B.to form, shape, i.e. to completely change or transform

So all for whom Christ died shall be be Created Holy in a New Creation, this is how they become sanctified internally, its that renewal Paul speaks of here Titus 3:5

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

That word renewing means:

I.a renewal, renovation, complete change for the better,

B.to be changed into a new kind of life as opposed to the former corrupt state

The Sanctification that Christ's Death provides changes the inner man, or it would be incomplete !

Also, thats why its foolish to think or believe the Lie that Christ tasted death for all humanity without exception, as false teachers wretch to their own destruction Heb 2:9

9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

If tasting death for every man meant all without exception, then all without exception would be Sanctified by His Death as stated in Heb 10:10 and consequently all without exception would be made a New Man, would be given a New Life unto God, or His death failed to once and for all Sanctify them, which is Blasphemy to High Heaven ! His Sanctifying death mandates an implantation of New Life !

notice Ephesians 4:24 is instruction that the born again believer is to put on the new man ... and a couple of verses before vs 24, God gives instruction that the born again believer is to put off the old man:

Ephesians 4:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

the "old man" refers to the old habit patterns developed over the years before the believer was born again.

the "new man" is who the believer is after he or she is born again.

Reading further in Ephesians 4, God tells us some of the old habit patterns we are to "put off":

Ephesians 4:

25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

27 Neither give place to the devil.

28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice

if the born again believer exhibits the behaviors shown in vss 25-31, that is indicative that he or she has not put off the old man. Once the believer realizes that he or she has fallen back to old habits, the instruction in Ephesians 4:22-24 is to put off the old man ... be renewed in the spirit of your mind ... and put on the new man.

3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him

the "many" in Hebrews 2:10 are those who did not neglect so great salvation.

those who neglect so great salvation will receive the just recompense of having neglected ... the Lord Jesus Christ is the only salvation ... there is no other way.

Sanctified by His Death !2

Lets revisit the word sanctified in Heb 10:10, its the verb hagiazō ,from the adjective hagios which means:

sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):—(most) holy (one, thing), saint.

The verb means also :

to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin

Which meaning it has here 1 Cor 6:11;Heb 13:12 and is akin to what the writer of Hebrews means here by the word purged Heb 1:3

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

The word purged here katharismos means:

a cleansing from the guilt of sins wrought by the expiatory sacrifice of Christ !

Amen, a cleansing from the guilt of sin contracted by the fall in Adam and afterwards in themselves, strictly by the Death of Christ, after which He " sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on High " !

This again points to the offering of Himself, His Body Heb 10:10

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Many false teachers deny that those Christ died for are by His death alone, not His resurrection, deny that by it they are saved from the penalty of their sins, Justified from the guilt of them ! But thats exactly what the word sanctified means in Heb 10:10:

to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin

To be free from the guilt of sin is Justification ! The word Justification in Rom 4:25

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Its the greek word dikaiōsis and means:

  1. the act of God declaring men free from guilt and acceptable to him
  2. abjuring to be righteous, justification
The resurrection therefore is a open declaration of what the death of Christ accomplished, our Justification from all guilt of sin, and abjuring us righteous ! 43

Once the believer realizes that he or she has fallen back to old habits, the instruction in Ephesians 4:22-24 is to put off the old man ... be renewed in the spirit of your mind ... and put on the new man.

read the next verse, brightfame52:

Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

in verse 9 we read that the Lord Jesus Christ tasted death for every man ... all mankind ... all descendants of Adam

in verse 10 we read that many ... not all ... are brought unto glory.

the many are those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ:

Hebrews 2:

2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

The Lord Jesus Christ died for the whole world ... all descendants of Adam ...

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

is that what the verse says, brightfame52? ... or are you manipulating Scripture in your futile attempt to align Scripture to your dogma ???

 ... another concept not contained in Scripture.

We are to diligently study Scripture ... read it every day ... keep God's Word in our hearts ... we are to rightly divide the word of truth:

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

get out of here with your "inherit a Spiritual education" nonsense!

 ... more of your adding to Scripture in your futile attempt to align Scripture to your erroneous dogma.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God so loved the world. period.

Just read Scripture as written. God does not need you to add to His Word ... you need to believe what is written ... just as it is written.

Heb 10:10

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Many false teachers deny that those Christ died for are by His death alone, not His resurrection, deny that by it they are saved from the penalty of their sins, Justified from the guilt of them !
"those Christ died for" ... according to Scripture, the Lord Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world ... all descendants of Adam ...

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

as far as Hebrews 10:10, because you rip the verse from the context within which the Author of Scripture has placed the verse, you completely misconstrue what the Author of Scripture wants you to understand:

Hebrews 10:

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

According to the context, the comers spoken of in Heb 10:1 ... also known as the worshippers according to Heb 10:2 ...

Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once [for all].

the words "for all" do not appear in the text.

Sanctification is founded on the one offering of Jesus, not on our own offerings or sacrifices. Hebrews 10:10 contrasts the sufficiency of the one sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ against the insufficiency of the sacrifices under the Old Covenant (see Heb 10:1-4).

Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

the "them that are sanctified" are the "comers" spoken of in vs 1 and the "worshippers" spoken of in vs 2. By the one offering, the Lord Jesus Christ has done all that was required ... there is no need of any further offering (vs 10) ...

Hebrews 10:

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

The one-time offering of the Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient for the remission of all the sins of all mankind. There is no other offering for the remission of sin. The "comers" (vs 1) and the "worshippers" (vs 2) are the "them that are sanctified" (vs 14) ... these are the partakers of the covenant (vs 16) whose sins and inquiries are remembered no more ... they are remitted. There is no other offering for sin (vs 18).

More debating of the Truth, its crystal clear that the ones Christ died for were sanctified by it forever. Heb 10:`10

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

The word sanctified here is in the perfect tense and passive voice, the perfect means:

In Greek corresponds to the perfect tense in English, and describes an action which is viewed as having been completed in the past, once and for all, not needing to be repeated.

So the ones Christ died for have neen sanctified once and for all, so they are actually saved. Now is all mankind once and for all sanctified by the death of Christ ? No so Christ didnt die for them.

John Gill on Heb 10:10

By the which will we are sanctified,.... That is, by the sacrifice of Christ, which was willingly offered up by himself, and was according to the will of God; it was his will of purpose that Christ should be crucified and slain; and it was his will of command, that he should lay down his life for his people; and it was grateful and well pleasing to him, that his soul should be made an offering for sin; and that for this reason, because hereby the people of God are sanctified, their sins are perfectly expiated, the full pardon of them is procured, their persons are completely justified from sin, and their consciences purged from it: even
through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for al
l; this is said, not to the exclusion of his soul; it designs his whole human nature, and that as in union with his divine person; and is particularly mentioned, in allusion to the legal sacrifices, the bodies of slain beasts, which were types of him, and with a reference to his Father's preparation of a body for him, for this purpose, Hebrews 10:5. Moreover, his obedience to his Father's will was chiefly seen in his body; this was offered upon the cross; and his blood, which atones for sin, and cleanses from it, was shed out of it: and this oblation was "once for all"; which gives it the preference to Levitical sacrifices; destroys the Socinian notion of Christ's continual offering himself in heaven; and confutes the error of the Popish mass, or of the offering of Christ's body in it.
JFB Commentary:

10. By—Greek, "In." So "in," and "through," occur in the same sentence, 1Pe 1:22, "Ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit." Also, 1Pe 1:5, in the Greek. The "in (fulfilment of) which will" (compare the use of in, Eph 1:6, "wherein [in which grace] He hath made us accepted, in the Beloved"), expresses the originating cause; "THROUGH the offering … of Christ," the instrumental or mediatory cause. The whole work of redemption flows from "the will" of God the Father, as the First Cause, who decreed redemption from before the foundation of the world. The "will" here (boulema) is His absolute sovereign will. His "good will" (eudokia) is a particular aspect of it.
are sanctified—once for all, and as our permanent state (so the Greek). It is the finished work of Christ in having sanctified us (that is, having translated us from a state of unholy alienation into a state of consecration to God, having "no more conscience of sin," Heb 10:2) once for all and permanently, not the process of gradual sanctification, which is here referred to.
the body—"prepared" for Him by the Father (Heb 10:5). As the atonement, or reconciliation, is by the blood of Christ (Le 17:11), so our sanctification (consecration to God, holiness and eternal bliss) is by the body of Christ (Col 1:22). Alford quotes the Book of Common Prayer Communion Service, "that our sinful bodies may be made clean by His body, and our souls washed through His most precious blood."
once for all—(Heb 7:27; 9:12, 26, 28; 10:12, 14).

More unnecessary debate of the Truth, Christ died only for the children of God, and it gathers them in Jn 11:50-52

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
