The book of Enoch also parallels much of what is in the book of Revelation, but has even more surreal descriptions than those in Revelation. The more important thing is that up to and including chapter 3 in Revelation, the Lord informs the churches that they are to overcome the things in this age that keep us apart from Him. If we do so, then we be on the inside of New Jerusalem, and will not be among those who are outside (Revelation 22:15), where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Revelation 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Did Domitian himself order John's punishment ?
From what I can gather, it appears that Domitian himself had John banished to Patmos. Here's a little information on it:

Late in the first century, the Apostle John was living in Ephesus preaching the Gospel, teaching the Scriptures, and helping lead the church. Historians also maintain that he wrote his Gospel and three epistles in Ephesus, and was pretty outspoken against pagan worship there.

This didn’t sit well with the Roman Emperor Domitian. Roman historians such as Pliny described Domitian as a violent madman who persecuted Christians. Domitian was also a believer in prophetic omens, and he was one of the few emperors who insisted on calling himself a god during his reign. In about 86 AD, a temple to Domitian was built in Ephesus. At the same time, the people of Ephesus were forced to worship and make sacrifices to Domitian, practices that would have certainly been denounced by John.
John’s opposition to emperor worship, in addition to his continued preaching of the Gospel, ultimately reached the ear of Domitian and prompted him to take action. In 94 AD, the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Domitian, the elderly John the Apostle was exiled to the island of Patmos.

its the most difficult to understand ?
hmmm, really ?
i found the text fairly reasonable to read.
my difficulty was what everything would look like.
so, regarding preterist, historicist, futurist and idealist, what of all that is literal, metaphoric, or otherwise ?
my thoughts ?
ok, well, firstly, i don't think America has much of a role in the very end times.
i say that because people seem to think that America is the false prophet or related to that.
for me the false prophet is the catholic church.
You're Close. First of all, the second beast, who is later referred to as the false prophet, is revealed to be a person. For when Jesus returns to the earth to end the age, both the beast and the false prophet are captured and the two of them are thrown alive into the lake of fire. The underlined information would be indicative of two living individuals.

I personally believe, based on study, that the false prophet will be played by one of the future popes, who will use the beast to reestablish the RCC's power, as that pagan religious system stemming from the beliefs and rituals of ancient Babylon.

whats with the beast entering from the sea?
The reference to the beast coming up out of the sea is metaphorical, with the sea representing something else. For example, in John's vision, he saw the beast coming up out of the sea. But as an example, it could be figurative for the beast coming out of the sea of humanity.

and, why is Satan released before being thrown into the lake of fire for all time?
Satan being released from the Abyss at the end of the thousand years, is to fulfill God's purposes, just as the entire book is to fulfill God's purposes. As stated in Revelation 20:1-3, Satan is locked up in the Abyss for a thousand years so that he cannot deceive the nations during that time. So, during that thousand years, the world will have had peace and no temptations or deceptions from Satan and the powers of darkness. Then after all of that time of peace, as soon as Satan is released, many of the people of the earth referred to as Gog and Magog, once again rebel against God.

And one more, who is the "whore" ?
The woman is referred to as the Harlot/prostitute, The woman who rides the beast and Mystery, Babylon the great.

Obviously the reference to her as being a woman and her being a prostitute, is symbolic. It is stated that the kings of the earth commit sexual immorality with her which figuratively means to be unfaithful to Christ, while posing as His true follower. The meaning then is that the kings of the earth and the inhabitants are engaging with her in her pagan beliefs and rituals

In Revelation 17:18, the angel also tells John that the woman is that great city that rules over the kings of the earth. So now we know that the woman is a city and that the kings of the earth and the inhabitants are engaging in her pagan beliefs and rituals.

"The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits."

As stated in a previous post, Rome was literally built on and is famous for her seven hills/mountains

The reference to the seven hills on which the woman sits, is pointing to her pagan headquarters - Rome/Vatican.

The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.

Purple and scarlet are the exact colors worn by the Roman bishops and cardinals:

The woman who rides the beast is Roman Catholicism. Once that antichrist is revealed, the woman will ride him, i.e. utilize his power and authority to reestablish her religious authority and power over all inhabitants of the earth. According to RCC dogma, the pope is the ultimate authority over all people. Anyone who does not submit to him is a heretic and will be persecuted and will be punishable by torture and death. This was the status of the RCC when it was in its power. The popes controlled kings and their armies with the the threat of excommunication. It will be that way and worse when that antichrist is revealed.

Due to it being written in highly symbolic language.

The sea represents the realm of the earth, symbolizing "peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues. " (Revelation 17:15)

Amen

“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭4:2, 6‬ ‭

“And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth:

and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭8:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭15:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:

for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬
