After he has established his apostleship, he adds the Church in verses 6-7 "including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, to all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints" He establishes election as he begins this letter the Rome and all the saints Jew and Greek (gentile), many say he does talk about election until the 9th chapter, when he starts the epistle with election as he does all of his epistles.

This epistle is the creme de la creme of his writings, for Christian theology. Here's an outline of the book, it's not the end all be all, but it'll help us as an outline for the book. I love this book, I remember teaching this book in the prison and the men loved it. Me view was different at that time on salvation and I had to workout some verses. Which I had a hard time doing, I said what I was taught, but when I stubbled on the words, I knew I needed to teach the Bible as it was written and not how I was taught. Here's an outline.

C. Justification from the Old Testament (4:1-25)
1. Case of Abraham(4:1-5)
2. Case of David (4:6-8)
3. Promise to Abraham, apart from circumcision (4:9-12)
4. Promise of Abraham, apart from the Law (4:13-15)
5. Abraham's faith the standard for every believer (4:16-25)
D. Benefit of Justification (5:1-11)
E. Universal Application of Justification (5:12-21)
V. Sanctification: Imputation of Righteousness (6:1-8:39)

E. The Blessing of Life in the Spirit (8:1-39)
1. Liberation by the Spirit from the law of sin and death (8:1-11)
2. Additional ministries of the Spirit (8:12-27)
3. The security and permanence of the life of the redeemed (8:28-39)
VI. The Problem of Israel; God'd Righteousness Vindication (9:1-11:36)

B. Personal Greetings, Warning Concerning Schismatics, and Doxology (16:1-27)

This outline is from the Expositor's Bible Commentary. General Editor, Frank E. Gaebelein by Everett F. Harrison, Zondervan.

Hope this helps. i love the way Paul lies this book out, he establishes the weight of sin, which leaves us enemies of God with no desire to seek Him or service Him. Then he reveals God's love for His people.

**** nice outline...

****continuing on with the introduction of the Book if Romans---- do you realize you are a saint (Romans 1:17)--- this is our position in Christ and thus we should live as Saints by working out our Salvation with fear and trembling--- this does not mean living fearful lives but full of Respect and Gratitude for our Savior and not take our Salvation lightly---we are sanctified unto God and are being Sanctified in process as we yield to Him---- what does it mean to be sanctified...?---- it means we are set apart unto God---- like the Holy Vessels used in the Old Testament Service---- a modern example of a sanctified vessel would be your wife's special salad bowl centerpiece she uses for guests---- well I will decide to use that bowl to wash the tires on my car ( mind you I will completely clean it like new when I am done) --- but no, the wife will say that bowl is sanctified (set apart) for a particular use--- and so thus are we set aside for God's Service ( not for worldly use)----- Paul urges us to live consecrated lives of service to God seeing we have received the Mercies of God (Romans 12:1)--- the main teaching of this book is God's Righteousness ( justification by faith) (Romans 1:17)--- In this Book of Romans Paul teaches the main points of Christianity---Martin Luther started the Reformation 500 years ago with half a verse ..."The just shall live by faith."
Thanks, good GOOD food.

I like the way Paul set up the book and who it's written to and applies to. We always need to keep the epistles in context and remember that they are being written to the body of Christ. So many times you'll see people trying to apply what is for the saints to those that are not part of the Church. I've noticed over the years that there are a lot of "we" "us" "our" "you" which makes it apply to the Church and not the world or unsaved.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to be long to Jesus Christ, To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans is the book of books, it has all of Christian doctrine in it, if you're stuck or not understanding something in an other epistle, you can get a better understanding by looking for it in the book of Romans.

Roman 1:16-20*********"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they without excuse:"******more to come---but here are some questions to consider----1. What is holding the truth in unrighteousness mean? 2. Is God's Wrath still being revealed today in the Grace Period? 3. What does it mean to live by faith? 4. Paul is including the Jews first for salvation and then the Greeks---why Jews first? 5. What is nature revealing about God?

***How great is our God----God's existence is revealed through nature everyday and every night. God does not speak in words in nature, but in Silence and all people and languages understand. God cannot be hid, just as the sun cannot be hid in the sky.

****How many people today are "suppressing the truth in unrighteousness" (Romans 1:18)***holding or suppressing the truth is being done in many areas in today's society------talk about "spin"-----take any issue and twist it enough and you have suppressed or held the truth unrighteously---Many issues in the Church today are being suppressed by man's desires and man's doctrines----always beware when people suppose to have the "truth"---examine it closely---study it closely---don't be deceived------sugar coating sin---suppression*********renaming sin to make it o.k.---suppression*********listen closely to what men are saying---is truth being suppressed or held in an unrighteous way---trying to cover it with a tarp and putting tent pegs on the corners to hold it fast...

Think about it ----how is the wrath of God being revealed "today" against all unrighteousness and ungodliness of men (Romans 1:18)-------some teach that God does not judge under Grace---is this correct? If we are holding the truth in unrighteousness we can see God's Wrath revealed----what will happen---how are people suppressing the truth---what is the reaction of God...?

*** OH SINNER----go ahead and suppress the truth--- cover it over and restrain it---- what is God's reply--- to turn you over to your sinful desires (Romans 1:24-26)---- God's will allow that sin to eat you alive until you cry out---- or maybe you will become "dead" to God's dealings---- you no longer even think or feel a thing---and could perish in sin----this is a horrible truth being even played out today while practicing homosexuals attend Church and worship God and say we are clean--- not to pick on the homosexual community--- this is just a very visible example of a group of people putting a tarp over God's Word--- suppressing it and even drawing more into their folly and shame...

*** ROMANS 1:17***What a Scripture--- we are saved by faith and walk by faith---- our faith is not in our works but Christ's---when Martin Luther in 1517 discovered the truth of this Scripture it changed the world--- we cannot earn our salvation through works, religion, or wishful thinking*** Praise God...

***Romans 1:21-25*****"Because that, when they knew God they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. ***this Scripture is teaching us a few things, being thankful is a great key*** being thankful opens the door to God's Blessings*** being unthankful can close and darken our hearts *** sticking to God's Word is a key*** it ends confusion and brings light, but our weird imaginations can get us in trouble*** we can change God's Glory into worshipping this present world and focus on vain or foolish things if no profit*** be wise and give God Glory and keep our imaginations grounded I God's Word*** if you want your own way God will grant it, but it is degrading you and the way of sorrow*** choose wisely...

ROMANS 1:26-32 ****** "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their woman did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetoustness, maliciousness: full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity: whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." ****more to come... Questions to ponder: 1. Why did God give them up to vile affections? 2. What is a reprobate mind? 3. What is the fruit of apostasy?

***rejecting God and turning to sinful practices is dangerous, for we can loose sound judgment and no longer realize we are in sin*** when God "gives you up" to vile sin ( Romans 1:24, 26, and 28) you are headed for hell unless you wake up from the nightmare of sin*** some today profess liberty to do wickedness saying they are clean (even ministers), how horrific***yes we should have compassion on these stubborn sinners, praying God will wake them up before it's too late*** they are in such a state of sin that they even encourage others joyfully in their shame; a list of sin corrodes their souls (Romans 1:29-31)...

Continuing on in Romans-----------------Chapter 1:6-10 "Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you."-------------------will get back to talking about this part of Romans later---just one comment in verse 8 ..."I thank my God, through Jesus Christ for you all," ---this is proof Paul was a Texan through and through (you all)...

ROMANS 1:11-15 "For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that often times I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also." -----to be continued later---to discuss---major items to look at: 1. fruit 2. Paul being hindered coming 3. Paul debt...? 4. Spiritual Gifts and their use...
