The validity of preterism lies solely in the premise that what is being spoken of in Revelation is the promised sanctions God promised would come upon Israel for failing to keep the the terms of the old covenant.
“See, I have set before thee this day
life and good, and death and evil;
( the blessing ) in that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to
walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
( the curse )
But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that
I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore
choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”
Deuteronomy 30:15-19 KJV
even when you get to the prophets it’s still based upon the covenant made between them and God
Like this
“Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. ….( thier punisjment is being explained about Jerusalems destruction but then )
Therefore also now,
saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?”
Joel 2:1-5, 12-14 KJV
age was always calling then to repentance sayong if you return to me I will forgive you and restore you but if you don’t this terrible thing is coming …..the ot is always based on the structure and principles of the law
it could have been the blessing he said to them if they obeyed ….or it could be the curses he warned them about if they broke his covenant and refused to repent the whole ot is structured that way
if we just read a sentence or two it could seem like it’s without condition and didn’t matter what they did but if we read longer more complete sections we can see they needed to repent and turn back to him before it was too late and they didn’t do the curse came to pass for breaking the covenant and killing the messiah
thier last chance was the gospel and even then they claimed “ we have no king but ceasar , crucify Jesus he’s a hereitic and blasphemer !”
this completes thier rebellion and finalizes Gods wrath finally provoked past the point of repentance
