So often Christians seem to speak of the enemy as being people outside the church. It seems to me the enemy more often are people inside the church who follow their own pride instead of the Lord.

12For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me(Psalm 55:12-16).

King David knew about this, that sometimes it is not an enemy of God that you are odds with, but one who you went to the house of God with that did rise up against you.

Yes so often false teacher come from within the church to distort the truth, Paul fought against that in several churches. He even sent Timothy to one and told him to command the false teacher to stop.

2nd Peter 2 says "But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed."

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
This is where things start.

Jeremiah 5:31: "The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?"

Jeremiah 14:14: "And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart"

Lamentations 2:14: "Your prophets have seen for you False and deceptive visions; They have not uncovered your iniquity, To bring back your captives,
But have envisioned for you false prophecies and delusions"

Matthew 7:15: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves"

2 Peter 2:1-3: "But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber"

and where are the verses about loving your enemy and blessing those who curse you?

it is easy to love those who love you, but can you love those who hate and abuse you?

can you forgive them as God has forgiven you?

can you love them as God loves you?

Do you pray for them and with them?

its not about fairness or sacrifice but mercy and grace.

1 John 5:16
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.

Good points, Ananda.

When I think about forgiveness, I'm reminded of His crucifixion. Despite excruciating pain, he was focused on others, the very people persecuting Him. Luke 23:34: "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

We need to remember we're in a spiritual warfare. The terrorist we're dealing with is Satan, the deceiver and the enemy, who uses others as puppets. We need to walk in the Spirit, putting on the Armour of God. Ephesians 6:11: "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil"

If a fellow Christian is living in the flesh and drifting from God's word..... Matthew 18:15-17: "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector"

We are to forgive others..

Matthew 6:14-15: "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses"

I have a question.

Who do you think He was talking about when He said, Father forgive them for they know
not what they do?

A very good question, :) I have asked it myself.
Was Jesus refuring only to those that were crucifying Him?
This was what I was taught as a child, but then I saw that Jesus was crucified for all our sins.
Then I knew Jesus was asking forgivness for all of us, for He took our sin upon Himself for our sake.
Asking forgiveness was His sacifice for us, :) His gift.
All glory is Yours Lord Jesus!

God bless

In refrance to the original question, the enemy is any thet seeks to steal, kill and destroy.
It will be any place it can find a hold.
But as scripture says, be as gentle as the dove and wise as the serpent. :)
We are to love our enemies and pray for them, but always look to all that is the protection of God.

In Jesus, God bless

too often people look for a flesh and blood enemy. they would rather demonize the people they see in the flesh then see the demons through eyes of the Spirit.

I have people tell me that they would not want the gift of being able to see demons or angels. They say they believe that they are around but prefer for them to remain unseen. they prefer to remain blind.

however I always wondered about the people in the Bible and how they saw the world.

take Elisha for example:

2 Kings 6:15-17

New King James Version (NKJV)

15 And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
16 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

therefore the enemy is not those you can see with the fleshly eyes but the unseen spiritual darkness in high places and the strongholds that trap people in their lies and slavery to their sins. yet we should heed God's message and not fear for we too are surrounded by His angels who guide and protect us, though we may not see them. For it says in the Hebrews 1:

14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

therefore test the spirits to see if they are from God and harness your thoughts and tear down the strongholds for the Enemy is often of a spiritual nature and not of a fleshly one.

2 Corinthians 10
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
