I heard it said recently that a better way to translate the verse is this:

"I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not withstand it." (credit to M.S. Heiser)

That throws quite a different slant on the verse. It shows the Church victorious, rather than cowering in looming defeat.
That's a fanciful idea but I don't see anything in the Greek to support it. The Greek κατισχύσουσιν (katischysousin) is derived from κατισχύω, "to have power over, overpower, prevail against." In other passages of scripture, another Greek word ἀνθίστημι (anthistémi) is translated "withstand or resist" (see Galatians 2:11).

I'm willing to entertain this idea if you can produce credible evidence for why it's a better translation. To me it seems like a case of someone trying to make a case because they like the twist it will give to the passage, not good translation.

Matthew 16:18 I tell you that you are Peter. And I’ll build my church on this rock. The gates of the underworld won’t be able to stand against it (CEB)

The only translation I found that translated this word similar to "withstand" is the CEB (Common English Bible). This bible was published as a counterweight to several Evangelical translations.

1. They try to neutralize any gender language. For example "Happy is the man" in Psalm 1:1 is translated as "Happy is the person".

2. They translate "Son of Man" as "Human one".

3. Another verse, Genesis 15:6 "And He believed in the Lord and He counted it to him for righteousness" they translate as "Abram trusted the Lord, and the Lord recognized Abram's high moral character".

Amen for praying to know Christ, but to throw out scripture is folly. You can't know Christ without knowing God's word. You'll end with some man's opinion of who Christ is. The more you talk, the more it sounds like your pastor is part of the problem.
Tell that to the jews.....wait hold it...i think jesus did.

We are all born into the kingdom of darkness. The revelation of God of the person of Christ translates us from that kingdom into the kingdom of light. The gates of hell cannot hinder the work of salvation by being closed.
Essentially, Satan's house is being plundered by the light of the gospel; the cross having bound the strong man of the house first.

Here’s a good synopsis of NAR.

This is a good summary.

A lot of people are starting to deny they belong to the NAR or that the NAR even exists because of the bad publicity it been getting. It's true the NAR is basically decentralized; however, there is a recognizable leadership and they have their own website, The International Coalition of Apostolic Leaders, https://www.icaleaders.com/. But it's the teaching that distinguishes them more than the title.

The NAR is really the culmination of the so-called restoration movement that started with John Alexander Dowie, a self-styled "Elijah who is to come" who restores all things. There's a long thread of restoration groups that descend from him who claim their mission is to restore the church to its roots and prepare the way for the Lord. So far the "restoration" has been going for over 130 years.

So, who's witness would you rather learn about Jesus from, your pastors, or the scriptures?

Matthew 16:

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

A 'gate' usually always refers to the entrance to something.

So, what does 'gates of hell' refer to?

The obvious answer is that it refers to the entrance to hell.

What is it about the entrance to hell that could possibly 'prevail' against something?

With regard to the word 'prevail', I will suggest that the verse is concerned with entry into hell.

My thoughts:

1) If a single soul passed through the 'gates of hell' after the 'church' ceased to exist - the gates of hell could be said to have prevailed against the church.

2) If a member of the 'church' passed through the 'gates of hell' - the gates of hell could be said to have prevailed against the church.

What does this tell us?

1) The 'gates of hell' will not "outlast" the 'church'.

In other words, the 'church' will be around until after the 'gates of hell' has "taken in" the last soul that will ever pass through those gates into hell.

2) The 'gates of hell' cannot claim any member of the 'church'.

No member of the 'church' will ever pass through those gates into hell.

Turn it around now...

If the 'church' does anything [at all] to prevent a soul from passing through the 'gates of hell' - the church has prevailed against the gates of hell.
