the evil servant was a coward.
Hmm... Morever, the Master calls him wicked and lazy, so it seems to me there was a problem in his faith. It's possible cowardice was part, but I see a possibility that it was different. Perhaps he simply didn't care to please the Master because his work or no-work wasn't enough for Him.

Perhaps he was afraid of the persecution that would follow?
Yes. Thats what he was afraid of. When the Master was going into a distant land, he left by the cross.

(He still sounds like an Israelite who received the first seeds from his mentioning "a hard man to please'.)
The Master is only hard to please if the servant is trusting in the flesh, living for worldly pleasure. Jesus said,

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Mt.11:29-30

Beaten near death, humiliated and crucified is easy? Not for the flesh it isn't, but resting in the love of God it is.

Definitely a problem with faith. The servant isn't giving God anything that God doesn't already own,

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Rom.12:1

Devoting a life God gave is only unreasonable to an evil person.

I indeed thought that, and I think that's most likely the case... But then, why is this evil servant saying he was scared because of that? He's so open about it.
And also does this mean the servant here is an Israelite?
I disagree that this is what it means. Ok, the Master returns after entrusting a portion of wealth to his servant. The servant was lazy. When confronted the servant starts making excuses that he was afraid of losing the money because the Master is a tyrant, a person who takes what isn’t His. So, instead of the Master defending the unfounded statement, He traps the lazy servant in his own illogical defence. “If you thought I was such a tyrant, why did you not fear me enough to at least put the money in the bank for at least a bit of interest?

The servants or slaves were taken care of, fed, clothed and sheltered. Instead of doing what was requested the servant figured it’s not worth his time to try to make such a small amount grow. The moral of the story is that no matter how “gifted” or seemingly “ungifted” we may be, we can all contribute. It’s been said that a great number of people are willing to do a great work for God but few are willing to do a small. You don’t have to be the best, but you can’t be lazy.

I partially do not agree, but mostly I think this is pretty good.

He traps the lazy servant in his own illogical defence.
I think that the Master indeed could've seemed like a tyrant to the servant because "the Day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night." So there MAY be some logic to what he is saying there. But the rest is, as you stated, that he didn't fear the Lord enough, and he therefore makes a defensive statement. In that sense, he does appear to be a lazy servant to the kingdom of heaven.
figured it’s not worth his time
So I think it may not be true that he saw no worth in making his small talent grow. It could be that he just didn't want to due to lack of fear.

What do you think the “Day of the Lord” is?
