Allan, you will pardon me for asking, but you seem to be aging at an extremely rapid rate.

I am certain you were young when you started posting here.

The other day you were 79. Then yesterday, 81. Today 82. Are you the Incredible Aging Man?

Very confused as to why your age keeps going up and up!
I hope I'm not that old yet! For the record I'm 37

If you lie about your age, what else do you lie about? That's the problem with someone telling a lie. It becomes difficult to tell when one should believe them.

Again, I believe that Angela was confusing Allan's post count with his age. Sheesh! Must we now call a seeker of the truth a liar?

Maybe i should put up a picture of ny birth cirtificate for them all to see.

I don't know what's wrong with some people here. I'm quickly tiring of their attitudes and behaviour.

Sorry about that! I didn't realize you didn't have your age posted. I would have really freaked out when you got into the thousands!

Lol you just made a mistake. Other people decided to take what you said at face value and then believed me to be a liar.

A perfect example of what I've been saying about actually looking further into things and not taking them at face value.

Or, like just about all other members here, you could fill out your Profile Page so that folks would know just a little about you. As for me, I have reservations about you, and have had since your first post.

There is something familiar about your questions/comments/threads you are Authoring, and your style of writing. Can't quite put my finger on it.............but will give you the benefit of the doubt for now.

If one is sincere, what does one have to hide?

Allan,

The dumbest thing anyone could do is NOT read something so that they will know what it says.... just because some paranoid people on a forum told them they should only read things the people posting happen to approve.

Oldhermit, they are talking about THE SECRET Gospel of Mark, not Mark or ch 16.
Ok, maybe I misunderstood. When the OP said "Sort of an extended version of Mark." I assumed he was referring to the latter portion of 16. This is known as the the extended reading.

Hey guys. Chill :)

On topic, the Secret Gospel of Mark (which is a COMPLETELY different thing to the Long Ending of Mark) is a gnostic text, which is based on one MS and for which we have no other attestation. The specific concerns of the text make it unlikely to be something any earlier than late second century, but many scholars believe it to be a later forgery of some sort, which has been posited by various people since the text was found in the 70s. Me personally? It's quite possible that a Secret Mark existed, but if it did, it was late, and textually it seems to rely on previous gospel traditions, a number of which it adopts and then embellishes or recontextualises within a more gnostic setting. I don't think it's a 20th century forgery, but neither do I think it contains material that predates the canonical Mark.

Oh, I see. That is one I have not heard of. I'll have to see If I can find a copy of the Greek MSS for that document and take a look at it.

The fragments of the gospel (it's really an 'expansion' to canonical Mark, and we have no way of knowing if we have all of it) are contained within an alleged letter by Clement of Alexandria. A page is here with Greek (needs a font) and images of the original MS, which was handwritten into the end of a 17th century printed edition of Patristic writings. There is no other textual support for Secret Mark outside of this Clementine letter, it is not referenced by any other Father, and the location of the MS now is unknown - the text now only survive in photos, although multiple people have independently said they have seen the manuscript at various times since the 70s.

Most of the debate about Secret Mark centres on whether the letter is actually from Clement (or some other ancient Clement, of which there were I think at least two from Alexandria) or whether it is a medieval or later forgery, and if the letter itself is genuine, whether secret Mark itself was a forgery or a genuine Markan product.

Thanks for the link. I think I see if I can muddle through in translating it. Looks interesting.

You had to look up the word pericope? What's wrong with you? Haven't you ever been on a submarine before? haha. Only kidding.
Actually, that's the word my eyes read the first time. Only because submarines aren't connected to the Bible did I figure out I might have missed something. lol

Yep. . .you need the Holy Spirit, who does the convincing, not your investigations.
I absolutely agree. The Holy Sprit grants the understanding. Without it we are blinded. Just start talking to God. Ask Him questions. Ask Him anything, everything. Read the non-canon books, but don't let them guide you in your ultimate motive. Understanding God.

In my discussions with with believers, I've been told to read the bible. Now that I am reading it you say its pointless?
Here's a link explaining the canon process.
https://bible.org/seriespage/7-bible-holy-canon-scripture
(Edit: idk what I did wrong with that link!)
It may bring more questions, but ask!!! Someone here told me not to be ashamed to present myself before the Lord. Always ask what you want to know. There are some Spirit led Christians here. They will find you. Be patient. Not all replies need even be entertained :)

Open your heart :) Not just your mind. God Bless You!! :)

You and I are about the same age. Didn't we age at an extremely rapid rate? I was just 24 about a decade ago. I had to laugh at someone on here last week because she was worried she was showing her age by mentioning she was a teen in the 90's. I keep thinking 1990 was just a few years ago. I'm aging too rapidly, I'm telling ya! lol

(Just kidding I already know how this conversation worked out, but I thought I wasn't the only one thinking all aging is too quick. lol)

Its not making excuses. I am reading it.

This endeavour could change my life and others have told me this could be the single most important thing I ever do.

Are you saying something that carries that much weight shouldn't be researched properly?

You can't just put a book in front of someone that doesn't match up with their current view of the world and expect them to take in on face value. Especially when it directly conflicts with everything you thought you knew about the world.

For me to accept this, I have to change my entire world view. Everything I thought I knew will be eradicated. To say I'm sidestepping reading the bible in favour of researching it is ridiculous. I read sections, re read sections, look for further information and I get all views that may oppose or agree.

Anyone who Doesnt do that is not really trying to understand anything.
I got news for you. You can't read that book and take it at face value. Try taking Proverbs at face value. Try Psalms at face value. You already read Genesis. Was there any way in the world you could take that at face value. There is some truly massive Whoa-there moments, that will make you think. Simply reading it can't be done at a mere face value. Figuring out who wrote what doesn't change that. We don't even know who wrote some of the books. They still say too much to dismiss them, and who dismisses something just because of an anonymous author anyway?

Also, as I recall everything I knew wasn't eradicated. It simply fit the pieces into a view that never quite capture the big question: "Why are we here?"

You sure about that? I think that is Allan's perception but Marc was treating it as if Allan was speaking of the Gospel esp. ch 16
"Could be" gives room for "not sure about that." :D

Was that a joke? You are talking to people from the country that had to see Barrack Obama's birth certificate and some still don't believe he's American. We are Americans. lol
