B. Let's go to Luke because as Luke says, he gives us an orderly account of all of this.
1. Luke 22:7-9, “Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” This preparation happens on the actual day of Passover and the first day of unleavened bread. They are not preparing to have it before the day but on the day. Notice Luke 22:19-22, “And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
Now notice, Jesus has the last supper on the 14[SUP]th[/SUP] day of the first month. We know this because we were told it was the first day of unleavened bread which must take place on the 14[SUP]th[/SUP] of Abib.
2. That same night Jesus is taken to Annas, “Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest.”Luke 22:54.
3. He is then taken before the Sanhedrin where he is questioned and abused. “When it was day, (the same day) the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber,” Luke 22:66
4.In the morning of the same day they take him to Pilate. Luke 23:1-2, “Then the whole body of them got up and brought Him before Pilate.” John provides us an important piece of the puzzle in John 18:28, “Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.” The priest did not want to defile themselves because they wanted to eat the Passover on that day. How can this be if Christ had already eaten the Passover on the previous evening? What time did they come and eat? Matthew 26:20 says, “Now when the evening had come, he sat down with the twelve.” What time was did Jesus sit down with the 12? It was at the evening which sunset. Now this is important. The Jewish day went from sunset to sunset. So this evening was the beginning of a new day the 14[SUP]th[/SUP] of the month of Abib, Passover. Jesus is eating on the right day but early because the normal time for eating it was the end of the day at the evening. Why is Jesus eating the Passover at the beginning of the day rather than at the end of the day? Because by the end of the day he would already be dead.
5. Now the Passover lamb was killed between the two evenings.
Exodus 12:6 says, “You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight.” The word translated 'at twilight' actually means between the two evenings. That would mean 3pm or the 9th hour of the day. This is important because Jesus dies at that exact hour the Passover lamb is slaughtered. Remember, Jesus has eaten the last supper early at the beginning of that day which was sunset. He was with Pilate the morning after the last supper at the beginning of Passover which the priests were going to observe at the assigned time of day.
6. Pilate offers to release Him because of a standing Passover tradition, “Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour”(noon),John 19:14-16. It is preparation time because the Passover would be sacrificed in the temple in about 3 hours. They then take him away to be crucified. Luke tells us that darkness fell from the moment they led him away to be crucified until the ninth hour when he died, Luke 23:44.“It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.” This was the very hour when the Passover would be sacrificed in the temple.
7. God expresses His satisfaction over the event.
Luke 23:44-46 says, “...and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last.” So, Jesus died at the same time the Passover lamb was being killed between the two evenings at the 9th hour and this is the exact time the temple veil was torn showing that what it had pointed to had come just as it is written.
So what have we learned so far? Jesus had the last supper on the beginning of the Passover feast, the first day of unleavened bread. He was taken that same night afterward to the priests and the next morning he was taken to Pilate on the same day of the Passover and by noon it was decided that Jesus would be crucified and then He was on the cross for about 3 hours until he died right at the time the Passover is being sacrificed in the temple.
IV. The Burial and Resurrection
They take the body Jesus to the tomb on the preparation day of the Passover but it is also the weekly Sabbath. Both Sabbaths fall on the same day the year Jesus was crucified. Remember, Jesus has died at the 9th hour so there is only 3 hours left till the Sabbath begins.
A. The burial
The ladies have gotten themselves spices during this three hour period either from the market or were using leftover spices from that which had been provided by Nicodemus. John 19:39tells us that“Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.” The women had been to the tomb to see where Jesus was to be buried and then had returned and finished preparing additional spices before the Sabbath arrived, Luke 23:56, “Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.”
B. The resurrection
1. Luke 24:1 says, “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.”
It is now the first day of the week/Sunday, and he has risen early in the morning about sunrise. Luke's orderly account shows that Jesus had the last supper at sunset with his disciples and then was crucified the same day. He is then buried on that same day and then the Sabbath comes. He spends the entire Sabbath day in the tomb and on the very next day following the Sabbath which was Sunday, Jesus rises from the dead. How do we know this is accurate, because of how the OT organized the events of the feast. Here is a point that many people miss.
In 1Corinthians 15:20 Paul tells us,“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.” What is the significance of Jesus being the first-fruits in relation to his resurrection?
a. Lev 23:5-11, “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight is the Lord's Passover. Then on the fifteenth day of the same month there is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the Lord; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work. But for seven days you shall present an offering by fire to the Lord. On the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall not do any laborious work.” Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, when you enter the land which I am going to give to you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring in the sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord for you to be accepted; on the day after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.”
So, we have the Passover, the unleavened bread, and then the offering of the first-fruits which was to be done on the morrow after the Sabbath. In other words plainly put, on the 14[SUP]th[/SUP] day of the first month was Passover, the 15[SUP]th[/SUP] was the Sabbath of unleavened bread. On the 16[SUP]th[/SUP] was the offering of the first- fruits. Jesus followed this exact pattern. He died on the day of Passover and then the next day is the Sabbath and he rests in the tomb. The next day after the Sabbath is the offering of first-fruits and Jesus rose on that day after the Sabbath. This tells us that the Passover Sabbath and the weekly Sabbath fell on the same day that year. That is why John says in John 19:31 “Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.”
It was a high day because the Sabbath of unleavened bread happened on the same day as the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day weekly Sabbath. The feast proves beyond any doubt that Jesus died on Friday and rose early Sunday morning. The argument that there had to be three literal days and nights in the grave simply cannot fit this revealed time lihttp://christianchat.com/bible-discussion-forum/147736-sign-jonah-3.html#post2968393ne. Jesus died on the Friday around 3pm. He was in the grave from sometime just before sunset Friday until sunrise Sunday morning. By the Jewish reckoning of time, this constitutes three days but, there is no way it can constitute three nights, I don't care how one may try to manipulate it. So, how are we then to understand the words of Jesus in Matthew 12:40,“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Mark 8:31 “And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again”
In Matthew 17:22-23 Jesus gives definition to his use of "in the heart of the earth" in chapter 12, "And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men; and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.' And they were deeply grieved." In the heart of the earth is the same thing as "into the hands of men." From the time Jesus was betrayed to the time he rose from the tomb was three days and three nights.
