In Romans 13:1 it speaks about how God establishes our authorities. In other words, he appoints our leaders.

An example of this is when the Israelites wanted a king instead of Samuel as their leader. To sum it up Samuel was against it and he prayed to God about the matter. God warned them that having a king would not be the best thing. However, the Israelites didn't care because they just wanted to be like the other nations who had a king.

Then the LORD told Samuel to give them a king. The LORD leads Samuel to Saul and God appoints Saul as king over the Israelites. We know what happens, Saul is prideful and disobedient--The LORD rejects Saul as king and sends him a tormenting spirit.

As I was reading this story the LORD prompted me to pray for our leaders and for our upcoming elections. I pray for godly leaders, but often times we don't get them. As I read Romans 13:1 it encourages me to know that God is in control. I have peace because He appoints our leaders.

I was pondering... why do you think God appointed a prideful man like Saul to be king in the first place? Was it because of the Israelites disobedience or something else?

God is awesome! I enjoy the books of Samuel and the many lessons that one can learn from this story. Please share your thoughts I want to get a deeper understanding of the story.

The children of Israel rejected the Lord, so they were given over to a cruel lord in Saul, much like this world who has rejected Jesus Christ have been given over to the Devil. (Prince of this world)

1 Samuel 8:7
And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Isaiah 53:3
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

One of the many things I love about reading the bible is how I can read something and get a meaning out of it then the next time I read the same thing and get a deeper meaning. Reading about Saul was one of those instances for me. How I see it is if you are praying for something not of God's will, watch out. Having a king was not of God's will but the people kept pushing and pushing. I like how it also shows how our inward sins can be so destructive. Jealousy, vengeance, pride, greed.

Sometimes God chastises by giving a nation or a person the very thing they belly ached for.

it's like the others have said. The Lord wants to get something out of the way, before giving us His best
