In order for their sins to be forgiven, they had to follow the law.
No that is not the case. Jesus said the law was a schoolmaster to show Israel that they needed the Redeemer sent from God. The NT opens the OT to proper interpretation. It is easy to draw the wrong conclusion if you fail to read the OT with NT knowledge. Salvation has always been about believing. Abraham was deemed righteous because he believed God. Abraham worked the works he worked because he believed God.

How were their sins forgiven? By believing or by doing?

Silly question if you actually examine it. They had to believe in order for their works to prove the glory of God.

The NT Christian works because he is saved not to become or remain saved.

Through their obedience by following the ordinances of the law, their sins could be forgiven. Our sins are immediately forgiven upon believing the gospel. An OT believer lived by their individual faith which had to be justified through their obedience. We are justified and live by the faith of Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Incorrect. Their sins were covered by the sacrifice of a lamb and the sprinkling of the lambs blood on the altar. This was accepted by faith that the High Priest actually performed the ritual and that God accepted the sacrifice.

No forgiveness without the shedding of blood. Lambs blood done yearly Christs blood done one time for eternity.

The only way to be born again is to believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus for sins. Period. This was not possible until after the cross.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
You cannot believe unless first born again. Faith is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, not the flesh.

They had to make sacrifices all year long for every transgression. The priests were ver bust, continually offering up sacrifices as the people brought them in. Read Leviticus.

Only one time a year did they offer a lamb. One offering one time a year to cover the sins of the people.
