LOL

I just noticed that it has taken 9 more posts to answer this question than it did to clarify my existential post on reality - isn't that just the way we Christian work?

Lord, give us your guidance

If it was annoying you aspen why did you add to post????? lol

I was a very foolish christian before i really started taking god seriously. I would constantly smoke weed, drink, swear, boast, & make VERY bad choices & would always find myself asking.. why am i not getting anywhere in life? why is it so dull? what am i doing wrong god?!?! lol it was probably the drugs that held me back, but anyways one day i was just compelled to read the bible but when i opened it
I said in my head.. 'pffft yeah right, how am i gonna read this thing..' so i just started with the one book that interested me the Most.. can you take a guess at what book in the bible an idiot(me :D) would probably start with to gain knowledge & wisdom?!?! BINGO! PROVERBS! WoOP WoOP! [lus it was very interesting to me because as i read i could see my downfalls in almost every way i was living foolish.

Proverbs 3:4-5 stuck out alot to me though & i had remembered hearing & memorizin it as a kid.. but never really gave it much thought ( really thought it was some nut who was just so into god) but when i applied it to my life i learned to trust the holyspirit(god in you) & listen to him even though i wanted to keep doing worldly things like smoke a J or get hammered constantly, i found myself gaining self control & the more i kept starving my flesh the more my flesh died & the easier life had become. All i had to do was not lean on what i felt was right or what i wanted to do, & do what GOD(The word) tells me to do & Everything worked out. Now i have quits all drugs. i havent touched alcohol since 2009 (well i guess jan 1st 2010 but that was last time.. new years party) & i have also improved my self through chirst. Thanks JC, you mah boi. After this i Started reading the rest of the bibile starting with new testament, matthew, & kept going in order.

i will tell you this much. once i started reading the word, i became to develope a hunger for it. & started reading it every opportunity i had in my spare time ( for instance on the bus ride to my job) its also good because when people see you reading the bible 1/10 times the odd person will say something & its a good way to share or help your ministry.

May the "I AM" be with you, - Master Yahweh.
May the force be with you, - Master Yoda?

Don't ask... about that very last line.. my mind wanders like a duck in a pond. o_O

Start with the new testament. Once you understand the Grace of our Lord and savior then go into the Old testiment from the begininng. (Lest you become overwhelmed by the law and the geneologies) The book of John is usually the first book recommended to new to Christ. matthew mark luke & John are all different accounts of Jesus and his teachings and death & resurrection & more than one book may contain the same story. All are the word of God. In conjunction with the new testament read psalms and proverbs. Pray and sometimes the Lord will give you scripture in prayer. God bless you as you know the Lord by his word. Please always pray for understanding before you read regardless of where you decide to start. I would definitely NOT recommend starting in Genises... I tried this and ended up not reading my bible for a couple of years until someone told me exactly what i just told you. Understand Christ first then get into the history of the prophesy of Christ and God's relationship with the people prior to Christ.
I agree, then move to the old testament. , having the new testament read will help understand the old.
It can help you understand the wrath and compassion of God Our Father better as well.
God bless, pickles

Thanks for sharing that with us Holytrix, the word of God is most definately food for the soul, we need it as children of God. and your right sometimes it is a good witness tool as someone will usually always ask what you are reading.

Personally, I would start from Genesis and read to Revelation. I don't believe it is wise to start with the New Testament first, because it is not what came first. G-d had a very specific reason for giving us the Scriptures the way He did, and I don't think we ought to screw around with it.

Anyway, that's just my take on it. Where a lot of people go wrong is they think the New Testament will help them understand the Tanakh ("old testament"), when in reality, it is the other way around: the Tanakh helps to understand the New Testament.

Sorry to dissilusion you, but we do not have the original order. in our Bibles, pertainng to the old testament.

I have heard anyone here say that the new will help you understand the Old!. the old testamnet certainly shows us plainly God's act of grace by creation, His plan of redemption, His covenant (steadfast love for His people), His workings of Judgment and grace on a rebellious people, so in redemptive history yes we see that, and we see the fulfillment of all that in the OT by shadows and types of Christ.

So a new Christian would be better learnign about Jesus from the gospels. in my humble opinion, then learn about redemptive history.

Hi, You asked if you should start in the old testament. This is what I think. Pray about it and ask God to lead you to the book he wants you to start with. I would encourage you to start in the new testament and maybe find a bible study that is studing the old testament. The Holy Spirit will lead you and guide you into all truth!

Actually, we do have the original order :) But that's not what I meant, I meant the "old" vs. the "new".

Since Jesus is our savior we should learn about Him before we pursue any other reading.Read the New Testament first and understand what Jesus wants you to do and how to live and teach others.

Then read through the Bible where you will see where God tells us of the coming savior and you will be able to see how everything fits together and see the bigger picture and understand a great more about the truth.

I have read through the Bible and I read the Bible so I can see how everything fits together and can see the bigger picture compared to someone that has not read through the Bible and barely reads the Bible or maybe only read a couple of scriptures and left it at that.

It will make you more knowledgable in God's word and that is how I am able to answer people on different subjects and can see how this scripture in one book fits with another scripture in another book and if someone brings up a scripture that they have a misinterpretation of it that they believe I can show them that another scripture contradicts what they believe so they will understand what their misinterpretation really means.

Some people only skip around in the Bible and will believe something that another scripture will contradict but do not know about it because of their skipping around in the Bible instead of reading all the Bible.

But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken(Isaiah 28:13).

Sometimes the full truth is not always in one passage of scripture although you should still take it as it is and understand it the best you can.Sometimes you get a bigger picture when you know the whole Bible and see how scripture fits with other scriptures to give you a more deeper understanding of that meaning.

That is why Jesus spoke in parables to the crowd because those that were truly hungry for truth would be able to understand and those you did not care could not understand.

Chronicles is at the end. It would go right before Matthew if in a Christian bible.

If you are Christian start with the New... If you are Jewish, stick to the old.
If you are a Christian, you need both. They illuminate each other. The old sheds light on the new and vice versa... This seems like the common idea of the Old Testament doesn't matter anymore, because it was nailed to the cross. This is a clearly false idea. Both parts are necessary...

Now, as for where to start, There is no real wrong answer, as long as you do read the entire Bible... I personally prefer starting with Genesis, because it shows how everything began. I think one needs to understand where things came from to understand what came later and what is yet to come...

I would start in the new testament but it is really where God want you to start that matters. Go somewhere alone with your Bible and start praying. God will lead you to what to read. You could just be randomly opening the Bible and fall on a verse, a section or more. God may just want you to read a verse or part of one and to chew on that or a while.
