Actually the 144,000 are the 12 Tribes of Israel sealed by God to preach the Gospel to all the world along with the 2 witnesses who do God's bidding as well during the 7 year Tribulation ---- I believe the 2 witnesses are Moses and Elijah who represent the Law and the Prophets ---and who appeared with Jesus on the mountain when He was transfigured -----
The 144,000 remain unharmed throughout the 7 year Tribulation not one hair on their heads are missing ------this is God honoring His Pledge to His First Chosen Nation who rejected His Son ----but who He never forgot and honors them in the end ----

“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Deuteronomy 14:2 ESV
For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

3 “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” 4 Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.
I say ---so God seals these 144;000 ----So God must have plans on using these 144'000 for His purpose as He stops the destruction of the land and sea and holds back the wind --until these people are Sealed ----they are marked for a reason -----So what is the reason ???? ---they have a Godly Mission to fulfil -----

This should be a big clue why Moses is linked as one of The Two Witnesses.
John 3:14
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up.
Elijah and Moses in the image of the water, and the blood, that were present when the son of man was lifted up at the cross in the form of the two thieves.
The 144,000 are like Elijah and Moses.They hold the branch that lifts up the serpent.
John 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Holding the branch means that they're holding the testimony of the Two Witnesses, and will give their lives for it, and refused burial.
