1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

I'm having a bit of a problem wrapping my mind around this, a few questions...

For WHAT reason was the gospel preached to those who are dead?

Who are the dead spoken of here? Please connect these thoughts, thanks.

Things I'm considering, the first glance would say that the reason was that God was going to judge the living and the dead. That sounds ok BUT the dead here would need to be identified, are they dead christians? is Peter speaking of alive christians who are 'dead' to the world? people who died before Christ?

Thanks

If the dead referred to hear are all the sons of adam then this verse would teach universal redemption would it not since it says that they are alive to God?

PS. You did not follow directions Sir! :D

There are a few ways to look at this Scripture. It could be talking about those who are Spiritually dead, or it could refer to those who were alive, but are now dead. They where preached the gospel but at the point Peter wrote they had died.

Are you trying to imply that the 'dead' referred to are lost people? If so then you have an issue at the end of the verse where it says that these are alive to God. Please clarify thanks

Romans 7:24-25

24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Read the context of the chapter
1 Peter 4:1-4
(1) Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
(2) That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
(3) For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
(4) Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

we preach to the spiritual dead so that they might repent and be born again. their bodies are still judged by fleshly human standards of the law but their spirit is cleansed and given a tutor in the Holy SPirit to teach and refine them. Death still comes to this fleshly body but the spirit is eternal and God gives new bodies to His children.
Ephesians 2

By Grace Through Faith

1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

The dead here are the O.T. saints waiting in paradise for Christ to atone for their sins. The purpose of Him preaching to them is to bering them salvation and cleanse their sins with His blood. For the blood of goats could only cover their sins, not cleanse them

Thank you, this was insightful. See Abiding, some people can follow directions :p and yes I know it doesn't teach universalism.
