I was talking over this with a friend....since Sarai "took matters into her own hands" .....was she punished for not obeying God..?
Gods timing is not ours, but we being so human fail to understand that.... I just wondered if she was kept waiting because of her pushing the issue and insisting that Abram sleep with another woman to obtain a child..

I do believe she was punished in a way.
After all, because of her impatience, Ishmael, the future ancestor for all Arabs and such came into the land of Israel.
And because of that, there was much strife between her future descendants. I'm sure there was a lot of guilt involved and when Isaac was born, i'm sure she felt horrible for sending Hagar into the wilderness.

Also, i don't think she was "kept waiting" for pushing Abram to sleep with her handmaiden....
rather, i think there was just an enormous amount of guilt.
Wherever she is now, i'm pretty sure she feels kinda horrible....for causing so much bloodshed all because of a stupid decision of hers. YOU CAN'T SHARE YOUR MAN. PERIOD.
Lol, just some thoughts of mine.

I don't see how either Sarah or Abraham disobeyed GOD by having Ishmael. Up until that point, all that GOD had promised Abraham was that his seed would be innumerable. He didn't say that it would happen through Sarah. So how is it that either Abraham or Sarah were disobedient?

Hi sister,

Wasn't the promise given to just Abraham? So like Herosefromthedead said, she wouldn't be disobeying the covenant if she wasn't the one given it directly. It was through Abraham.

Maybe I worded it wrong...but she did laugh at the idea of having a child in her advanced age....I just Wondered if God saw this as unbelief...

Don't worry sister, well in real terms, she did doubted and lied lol. But it didn't affect the promise (Gen 18:14), Abraham had faith in God for what was promised. :)

Aye. I would imagine that Abraham, upon receiving the promise, would have automatically assumed this could only happen if he found himself a younger chick to bear offspring through since Sarah was beyond fertility.
Apparently Ishmael was a parallel plan of God, or He could have intervened before it happened.
And I don't believe for a second that Islam should be connected to Ishmael just because Christianity has made it a standard belief.

I guess she did punish her self with jealousy.

I'd say if she were punished, it was at her own hand. She reaped what she sowed.

This is an interesting thread. I like it. Thanks. I believe that Abraham and Sarah tried the best they could to obey God. They were imperfect just like the rest of us. I don't see how Sarah was punished. Her mistakes and sins seem pretty minor to me. She just had to wait. Some times God does that to us. He just says that we need to wait. And we usually learn more about trusting in God while we wait. With the whole Hagar thing, neither Abraham or Hagar or Sarah were punished for what they did. I believe the decision to bring Hagar into the family must have been a choice they made together with God. The evidence of this was that none of them were punished, but blessed by God. Sarah, however, caused some problems with her jealousy later on...but Hagar probably didn't make it easier on her either...knowing women. The whole family missed out on some blessings because Hagar and Sarah could not get along, but I don't see that as a punishment: just a consequence. They were good people with real weakness and God made the best he could out of the circumstance. I hope to met Sarah after this life. I think she is a wonderful person.

If there was a culprit culpable it was Abram. He was the head of the household while consenting to Sarai's strategy.

Hagar had NO SAY, she was a slave. She only complained to God, NEVER to Abram or Sarai.... And you are right at this stage they were BOTH sinners, but Abram would have a name change, and so Sarai, and with the name-change a spiritual change as well... Ths you should NOT MISS... It did not matter how big or small they sinned, God was going to change that. FOR ABRAM AND SARAI... not for HAGAR OR ISHMAEL....

Abram would get the boy Isaac, and God would make Abraham a righteous man by the FAITH God would implant in Abraham... And God did! God says in Romans 4 that teh faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness... So I have NO problem that Abram and Abraham, were God's work to make Abram the sinner, Abraham the righteous. I will not take God on in an argument about this fact. It is also more evident of God making Saul the sinner, Paul the Apostle...

ALL these things is God's Word in ACTION. This boy ISAAC was the first boy an ANGEL (EVEN GD HIMSELF) predicted (prophecied) to be born. Also HIS NAME WAS GIVEN TO THE PARENTS BEFORE HE WAS EVEN BORN.... WOW!

Well let us have another WOW.... Then MANY YEARS LATER... this time an angel appeared to Sacharias and this is ALSO an old couple with no kids... Same as Sarai and Abram, but these two were ALREADY BLAMELESS and they BOTH were RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD... WOW!!!! Imagine two people, a couple that GOD HIMSELF DECLARES RIGHTEOUS BEFORE HIM.... WOW!!!! Now we do not know when this old man prayed to God for a son, but he did.... MAybe every day, we do not know this... All we know is God heard the prayer and God decided to give this old man the son he wanted....Then the Angel said to the old man.... You shall have child, and you shall call him JOHN.... WOW!!! Another name before the Child is born.... This time the angel said.... HE SHALL BE GREAT IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD.... Why? He SHALL BE FILED WITH THE HOLY GHOST EVEN FROM HIS MOTHER'S Womb...... And unlike ANY OTHER MAN EVER BORN SAVE ONE... This is the ONLY MAN EVER (save ONE) that will be filled with the Holy Spirit from day 1.

Then another woman is preagnated, but as a VIRGIN... Mary, and both she and her husband is told that this is the CHRIST... Also HIS name was given before he was born.... WOW three special boys this? Is it not? And Isaac was special, but John more so and Jesus? WOW! Thank you for this chat... IT is God at WORK...

Genesis 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

The promise was made to Abraham, and involved Sarah directly.
