The Debater

Christian debate is an oxymoron. A debater seeks to win an argument by posting as much as he can without really hearing what the other person is saying nor responding to the other persons comments. They usually try to stack up a bunch of quotes or scriptures against you in an attempt to be the WINNER in their STRIVING. They feel that after ignoring what you’ve said and pasting their quotes they have TRUMPED you and EUCHRED you and WON.

The debater is always ready to speak and he is waiting for his opportunity to pounce his opponent into the ground and normally is ready to bring up something different and usually when the person trying to reason with him is trying to bring something to his attention, his attention is focused on what he is going to say next rather than hearing what this person is saying.

Isa 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

The Reasoner

The person who is reasoning will listen to the other persons comments and he will hear what that person is saying and rather than trying to WIN an argument he seeks to understand that person and to answer that person according to what they are sharing with them rather than putting out a ton of information in an effort to confound everyone and show everyone how GREAT he is.

Php 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

In other words a debater is in a competition which is of the devil, they seek vainglory in their strivings they seek to be like the most high, they seek to WIN. A reasoner is someone who listens and serves and seeks to be a lowly servant like Jesus Christ. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE and every Christian needs to understand it. Let’s look at some scriptures.

Yes i hear what you say and i understand so i don't have the intention to debate ;)

Isaiah 1:18
Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Not all debates are like this. You can debate and be a reasoner at the same time. Unfortunately it can be rather rare to find people like that.

Debate seems to have a negative connotation. I normally view it as a discussion. I lay out my evidence for something, someone hopefully reads it thoroughly and presents theirs while showing errors in mine. I do the same in return. That's the best way. Usually someone gets personal and bitter and the discussion is really not a discussion. It's almost impossible to teach someone something new. They love what they know already and change is hard apparently.

I Believe Brother Naphal, your miss the point of this discussion. The post is on two types of people, Not a type of discussion. and then your mixing the two, the type of people in the type of discussion. as i'm hoping to understand your point. But that's not what this post is about.

The focus of the post is on the actions, not the names which are used in describing their actions. and if your actions in a discussion is to Win, then your that type of person. and that's not a person of Reason. As the Lord says to Isaiah, Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Here the word reason was use to describe the discussion between the Lord and Isaiah.

LOL...the type a person and their approach in a discussion. A person who speaks, are you speaking to show how knowledgeable you sound or speaking in meekness and open for correction. Just saying!

are you trying to debate with US!!!

j/k love you consumed ;)

I've found that feeding people cause them to be more reasonable and shows a servant mentality. kind of like Jesus was willing to wash His disciples feet. I've found that with people's mouth full they are less likely to agrue/debate, etc.

Good stuff (the topic AND the food...yum!)

Though (not to be argumentative, but to be slightly argumentative....) I think that the 'debater' mentality could be more accurately called the 'argumentative-know-it-all'.

:D

Debate is listed as a sin.

Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

I believe debate is not about the way people act but what they are talking about.

2 Timothy 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do engender strifes.

Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

So if debate is a sin, why bother posting? You'll cause someone who disagrees to post something about their disagreeance and you've caused someone to stumble!
