When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

2And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

3Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
These verses warn us to be careful when we are in the presence of those who are powerful … those who exert influence over others.

These verses remind me of Daniel 1, where Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself (Dan 1:8). Daniel asked that he, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah be allowed to eat pulse (vegetables) and drink water (Dan 1:12) and at the end of ten days they were fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat toe portion of the king’s meat (Dan 1:15). According to Dan 1:17, As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

4Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
These verses warn us not to over-work in our efforts to become rich. The focus here is those who work to be rich. There are many verses in Scripture which tell us to work, and warn us not to be slothful, in order to provide for the necessities of life. However, these verses warn against working to heap up temporary riches which may provide some temporary comfort in this life. Worldly riches are fleeting and temporary.

Scribe said:
6Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

8The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Is the ruler of vs 1 the same as him that hath an evil eye of vs 6? They could be.

The one who has an evil eye says eat and drink, but his heart does not contain the same sentiment.

To eat and drink at the table of the one that hath an evil eye will be such an unpleasant experience that the food which seemed so enjoyable will not settle in the stomach.

Do you think Solomon intended to say that if you think you will be successful in your new business that you will?
Is that what you think is the intent of these verses?

It is one of the most common ways it is misused. Obviously that is not what it means. Now that we are examining the context we can see that it is about compromising, and also thinking that the one who is tempting you to compromise cares about you. When they really do not, they are not thinking in their heart what you think they are thinking. LOL

This should be fun and educational.

What do you believe is the meaning of "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he"?

And how would you teach this in a sermon in your church?
The principle of quantum physics is first stated in the bible 😇

Proverbs 23:5-8

World English Bible

5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not?
For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
6 Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye,
and don’t crave his delicacies:
7 for as he thinks about the cost, so he is.
“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up,
and lose your good words.

It means people's actions reflect their intentions. If they have the wrong intentions, then any actions they take no matter how holy they might seem on the outside are tainted, and you must avoid them to protect your heart and soul.

Your thought life shows who you really are.
What you embrace in your mind you are that.

If you are not that anymore then you need to renew your mind to think in line with what you are.
Their may be a transition period.
so we are told to take every thought captive and bring it into obedience to Christ.

I believe “for as a man thinketh In his heart,so Is he”was talking about what a person thinks In their heart Is the way they really are.

the pharisees thought that as long as they were not offending the law where people could See them breaking the law that they were doing well

But GOD looks at the heart.

Paul said that they were doing the same things the gentiles were doing meaning that gentiles were sinning where a person could See that they were sinning whereas the pharisees thought as long as no one Sees me then I’m ok.

Yes. It is one of those scriptures that should have been understood by the pharisees but wasn't. It should also be understood by those who misuse it to teach something that was never intended but it isn't. Why? The heart condition of course.

Since I started this thread I have noticed almost daily how important the message in this passage is for us today. It is a powerful passage of truth that should be preached from every pulpit. As a man thinks in his heart so is he, and then an exegesis on the context revelation that is needed today.

I am even seeing the application where people are making decisions about their lives that will allow for "provision for the flesh" such as stating they want to change churches because another one is closer to their house when in reality the other one will not confront them for their carnal lifestyle, or they stop going to church and tell people it is because they don't agree with the preacher but in reality they are staying home drinking in secret. As a man thinks in his heart so is he.

Isn't it odd that when people hate someone they want them dead? How
about maybe a beating instead? Why not throw hot coffee or scalding water
in their face, or maybe singe their back with a hot steam iron while they're
sleeping? Why death? Because death is all that will truly satisfy the human
heart's hatred. Maybe nobody reading this will ever actually murder
anybody; but that doesn't mean they aren't a murderer. Wishing somebody
would die, is the wish of a murderous heart.

For example if a lion never ate meat even once in its life, it would still be a
carnivore because lions have the nature of a carnivore. In like manner,
even if someone's hatred never drove them to lethal violence; they would
still be a murderer because they have a murderous nature. In other words:
people's nature-- their longings --defines them just as much as their conduct.

"Out of the heart come murders" (Matt 15:19)
