What is your favourite statement about Jesus.

Mine is
  1. John 10:11
I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd risks and lays down His [own] life for the sheep. But also...
  2. John 10:14
I am the Good Shepherd; and I know and recognize My own, and My own know and recognize Me--
Jesus is our personal Lord as well as the Lord of the flock. And because he is our personal Lord his sheep know his voice. They also know he laid down his life for them.

Liberal theology denies the atonement and the propitiation through Christ'ssuffering and death. We can only overcome death through the death of Jesus, our death cause by our sin against God.

Luke 23 :33-34

*33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

*34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Does one believe that the Father denied Him what He asked for? If so, how could they possibly be one and in agreement?

What is your favourite statement about Jesus.
John 19:28
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”

John 19:30
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

This is the gospel message. All things were accomplished. The plan of salvation was complete. Jesus said "It is finished" The law was fulfilled. The one thing which the law said could save mankind (the shedding of Blood) was complete.

He did the work we could not do, by taking our sin on his body, and paying the ultimate sacrifice. It is finished signifying the fact that all that needed to be done for our salvation was now done. Nothing needed to be added. All God asks for us is to place our faith in these words and what Christ did. It is finished. I am saved because of What Christ did, and that is all. Without it. I am dead. With it, I can be made alive in Christ.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Also psalm 23

1<<A Psalm of David.>> The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Dear Hearer, I have many favorite verses about Jesus, including John 15:26 and other verses, but if I had to select one verse that is more revealing of the Mystery of God Himself, I would say I would choose John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 KJV. God bless you always in Christ our Saviour. Amen. In Erie PA USA July 4, 2011 AD Scott R. Harrington

yes, Scott, that's a good one. It sums up atonement and propitiation and the longing to save the world (even if all do not respond. But through giving jesus many will be saved.)

Hallelujah and amen.

I suggest you do a study on the issue of expiation versus propitiation, and you will find the NT word should be translated "expiation" and NOT "propitiation". We are not saved by a satisfaction of the Father's wrath against the Son by "propitiation", whereby the Son's death saves us from the wrath of God the Father, whereby the Son saves us from God the Father. God the Father loves us in Christ the Son. We do not need to be saved from God. But saved FOR God. Anselm of Canterbury's theory of the atonement is incorrect. In Erie PA Scott R. Harrington

Scott, I disagree. There had to be reparation for Adam's sin and our consequent sinning. The severity of God's wrath ia shown by his sentence against Adam. "Cursed is the ground because of you;
In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you Gen 3: 16-18)

Also echoed for prophecy for propitiation in the prophecy inJeremiah 12:7
7 “I have forsaken My house, I have abandoned My inheritance;
I have given the beloved of My soul Into the hand of her enemies.
8 “My inheritance has become to Me Like a lion in the forest; ...
10 “Many shepherds have ruined My vineyard... 13They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns,
They have strained themselves
to no profit. But be ashamed of your harvest Because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”

echoed by:
Psalm 221 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?

That is the answer as to why God forsook his beloved, for the sins of his people and his fierce anger.

Is Greek read left to right like English or right to left like Hebrew?? And I was wondering if you could give the literal translation of that, even if it doesn't make sense, in English?
