What made it so important was that God was with them and when they travelled he visibly showed his presence as fire and as a cloud.

Just as Jesus is present to us in the eucharist in the form of bread and wine.

The exodus was a time of deliverance from bondage to Egypt, and the events at Mt. Sinai included the giving of the law, organization of the nation, building of the tabernacle, and establishment of worship.

The Passover, (14 Nisan), which lasted for seven days, celebrated this exodus experience. It was one of three pilgrimage feasts in which all males were required to partipate, preferably with a trip to Jerusalem. During the Passover meal, a rehearsal of the events of the exodus was performed, often in the form of questions from children who were supplied with answers from the adults. In this way, the Israelites were constantly reminded of their history, and the interconnectedness of that history with what God had done for them, and to whom they owed their worship and allegiance.

the Exodus is a kind of ''disassociation'' from the pagans amongst whom you used to live, a Clear message you convey to them to let them know that ''we have nothing to do with you and that which you follow'' ... If you look into the life of Abraham (peace be upon him), you'll also see something simlar, a kind of ''Exodus'' where he leaves the people amongst he used to live and ''disassociate'' himself with them, and then goes to a new place in which there is absolutely nothing in order to build something, a family, a new way of life free of all the evil things of before, a God-fearing family, society, a better society, a more just society, a society ruled by God's rules etc.

the Israelites, they left a tyranical society whos rules and legislation is built on 'man-made' Laws to build (and live in) a new type of society whos rules and legislation is based on 'God`s' Laws ... a better society, a more just society, a God-fearing society .. Today, its quite the opposite, people are leaving and throwing behind their backs ''Gods Law'' under the pretext that some laws are ''barbaric'' and prefer to go after man-made Laws ... Where are you going O people ?

I think it was because it was a "fresh start" for the Israelites, and their entrance into the promised land where they would finally be able to worship God in the way he instructed them too.
