Should a sermon be long? Short? Funny? Not funny? Supportive? Fire and brimstone?

I prefer short, funny, supportive, and not fire and brimstone. I mean teach me something new, dont rehash the same thing every week.

My fear is that long services drive people away. Therefore, it seems to me sermons shouldn’t be too long, though there are other things in services, besides sermons, that can cause the service to be long.

Preaching the Truth, let the Lord lead you to the right church for the right pastor for you. Many, many different styles, find 'the one' that is right for you :)

In our church, they change pastors every few years. I like my church no matter who the pastor is. I think we get all the learning we need from reading the Bible and walking with the Lord. A good pastor makes a big difference, though.

When the sermon explains how the scripture relates to today and how I can best apply the lesson to my life, I stay interested and learn. I don't need fire and brimstone. I need truth. I need to check myself to see if I am still on the path. I know it's a tall order. :)

I think the four Gospels are the best teachers. I think pastors do the best they can, except the prideful ones.

I always want to see some expository teaching of scripture first and foremost. I am disheartened if I hear 25-30 minute stories with a "token" verse or passage of scripture chucked on the end. I think every sermon should close with a relational message bringing personal inspection and an offer to fully surrender to the Lord.

For me a good sermon is solid sound doctrine from the Bible. I don't mind humor in a message but I'd rather it be kept at a minimum. Preachers are dealing with human lives here and it's a very serious matter. Preach the wrong message and one can be accountable for the loss of a number of souls, that the preacher has to give an account for. This is why it is so important that we stick with the scriptures.

A great sermon is based firmly and completely on the word of God first and foremost. It makes my blood boil when I hear a pastor 'preaching' pop psychology with a little Jesus thrown in.

A great sermon should also be convicting, edifying, and relevant. A great sermon will make me cry out to God either in recognition of my need to grow in holiness or in thanksgiving for all that he is, has done, is doing, and will do. Some of the best sermons I've ever heard were given by John Piper, Paul Washer, David Wilkerson, and John MacArthur.

Having finally gotten working transportation I'm going to a new church on Sunday, so I hope to find that the pastor of this church preaches powerful and biblical sermons as well.

The best sermons Ive known are those where one knew the Holt Spirit was presant and pleading through the pastor.

My favorate was when our pastor, who rarely spoke about condemnation , did speak on it, and as the last word spoken saying the wages of sin are death? At that very moment lightning flashed and thunder shook the church.
I love when God provides the special effects to bring to us His word. :)
Evryone remembers that sermon! :)
