So I've been told a few times on CC recently that I am 'liberal', which causes me to wonder what standard people are using to decide who is and who is not liberal. What say you? What makes a person a 'liberal' christian as opposed to a 'conservative' Christian? Are there other categories?

As Christians, we should stay out of politics as much as possible. It doesn't matter if you are liberal or conservative, what matters is your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and if you are keeping his commandments. Can you do this within one political party? I don't think so, no.

FTT, I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I did not mean 'liberal' in the political sense, as I am most definitely a non-partisan moderate when it comes to politics. When people have said that I am a 'liberal' Christian I think they mean it with regard to theology or worldview. I realize that these often go hand in hand, but that wasn't what I was really getting at.

So to rephrase: what "doctrines" make a Christian liberal vs conservative?

I wish I knew. Doctrinal differences lead to denominations, denominations lead to a kingdom divided, a kingdom divided cannot stand. Unite! :)

Justified by faith in Jesus, imputed righteousness grace abounds/sanctification
Justified by law and grace- legalist earn salvation

Personally I like the phrase the ``Christian Left`` I find these are the people who selectively throw around the phrase ``thou shall not judge`` when they are trying to guilt people into giving to unGodly causes like Haiti or demanding Christian support for gay rights or instant and complete forgiveness for everyone`s sexual sins. Strangely they think nothing about judging people on causes more in tune with their secular values.

I think this describes a mix of political and theological definitions of 'liberal', rather than just a purely theological one.

I have no idea whats going on with you as to why they call you that. They call everyone anything they want as far I can see. I get called all kinds of things.
Liberal made me think of the honey stickers. Trying to pour sweet honey on everything and not speaking the truth to help one not go to hell. Or bends over back wards to please the ones who are in wrong and are cowards to tell the truth.

None of this is to you. It's what liberal made me think.

So the question is DM how do you define it and how do you see yourself if you were to put yourself in a box to tick

As far as i understand it..when you think of someone who is a Christian, you think of...if its a girl, say...you think of someone covered up, with a full lenght skirt, and a hat on, and a cross round her neck, and a bible round her hand. she is against all things worldy..homosecxuality, fornication, tattoos...w/e ...thats the sterotype for a Conservative Christian.

If you dont fall into the sterotype, with your theology, like your ok with homosexuality, tattoos ect....then generally your considered liberal.
If you dont follow the traditional views which come with Christianity, and you say things like...cultuar has changed.. or w/e ...
then your liberal :)

I like it how God says to look at the heart. I know lots of wonderful Christians and they have tattoos. I even like fat Christians.

I have tattoos, but I got them in my past. Would I get ink done again? No.

But there are no true Christians, disciples of Jesus Christ, who would ever advocate that homosexuality is "O.K." Homosexuality is sexual immorality, it is sin, it is a choice, and it is an abomination. I know plenty of people who have suffered from homosexual thoughts and experiences in the past, but they repented and turn from it.

I never said anything negitive towards anything :S i just told him the answer to his query.

However, loveschild, God does say look ath the heart, but the way you on the outside does matter. That is why he expresses that gluttoney is a sin. He also said not to pierce or mark your body.

The fact of the matter is that God DOES look outward ....like what if you had the number 666 on your forehead? taking care of your body is a major thing, the Holy Spirit lives within and your body is not your own, so how can a person get tattoos? they havent asked God permission...its not their right to permenantly mark their body.

I too, know alot of wonderful christians.

I think youve probably picked up from this that i come under the catogory of...Conservitive Christian.

Acceptance of abortion and gay marriage, denying the inerrancy of scripture are the most reliable marks I've found for determining a liberal Christian.

I would agree with this, however, there are people who claim to be pro homosexuality and "Christian" ..these are not true christians, and also, come under the catogory of Liberal Christians..

although i think even that title is too much.

Cast off those man made titles; If you are a true Christian you are a bible-believing, bible-obeying disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. You are not conservative, liberal, republican, democrat, you are His.
