It's experimental. Thanks for bringing to our attention any bad ad but please don't be critical or condemning. Donations don't bring in enough to support our labors and expenses so we're trying different ways. The great majority of users use the site without ever contributing anything (even a dollar), and we can't guarantee that we can serve thousands of people with no financial support or inadequate financial support. Here's a statistic: # of donations per month / # of users who log in each month = 1%. So out of all the users who log in each month, about 1% participate in donating any amount (and there is no minimum, even $1 is allowed). When I say that, I'm not complaining or whining, I'm just telling the reality of why, like many other "free" sites, we may need to run ads and try multiple means of revenue. Many people go on using our site for years (and can have very high expectations about us maintaining the site and handling problems and abuse case, and moderating it and so on) and never contribute a dollar, so I think it's not an unreasonable burden on them to have ads, and should be understanding of the fact that we're having difficulty and so we're experimenting.
I can block categories of ads -- that is probably under apparel > t-shirts so I will adjust that.
But please understand that it's a little unreasonable for anyone to expect no ads and never contribute even a dollar. We don't want bad ads and that's why we haven't had ads for all these years. But with recent changes made to Google ads (giving the webmaster much more control), and the fact that we're simply not getting enough revenue otherwise, yes we're experimenting with ads.
Please be positive and constructive and try to help us.
Also again, ads can be disabled for any supporter of the site, even if they just contribute a dollar a month. (Just message me in the forum mail please.) But it is our hope that the ads can be okay -- we don't want it to be like non-supporters have to see bad ads -- we shall see. Though we can't guarantee that it will be perfect, though if if there is more participation in donating that we're very glad to remove all ads and never have to worry about ads.
Hope that makes sense.
