I was loping about the Bible last night and stumbled in to Malachi and a scripture reminded me of John 18:6
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Why did they draw back and fall to the ground?

Malachi 3:1-3 a prophecy about the Messiah when he is known and appears........Jesus revelation was a time of judgement for this world.

1 “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,

Just a lazy observation I stumbled upon by accident. Kick it around. Let's see what you think...

Just a thought, but those words, I AM ... are powerful words coming from the mouth of God as they were in (Gen 3:14) referring to who He was.

Hi Stilly; Just an opnion that is probably obvious to all; I would think that Christ was letting them know, that He is going to allow them to arrest him, and being that Christs mission was to save people, i would imagine He was attempting to bring the officers towards salvation.

Forever in Christ

Your right. jesus did not just say I am. he said in the greek "amno domini" which literally translates I I AM. The same words spoken by Christ when he said before Abraham was, I I AM he. Of which they picked up stones to stone him for blasphemy (claiming to be God) because they, having devout knowledge of OT which they could recite word for word, Knew when he said these words, he claimed to Be God. For it was the name given By God to moses in which he was to be called.

I would agree with WeStand re: the non-violent demonstration of power. It made the point to all present that when Jesus went with them, He would clearly be going with them willingly, and that He WANTED it to be done peaceably. Since almost immediately thereafter He told them that they had what they came for (Him) (awesome that His first thought was for His disciples and NOT Himself) but to leave His followers alone, they would most likely think it a good idea to do as He asked after what they'd just witnessed. Even after Peter sliced off the guard's ear, he was not arrested. If the first sign didn't do it, surely the healing of the ear did...

Something else that strikes me are the very words He spoke, "I am he." Reminds me of Moses' meeting with I AM and being on holy ground. Those who were WITH Christ did not fall as I read the scriptures, only those who were not, unless I missed something...

God spoke, that would make anyone fall to the ground, except those who know Him,trust Him,love Him.Jesus was and is God,always has been and always will be.We can speculate on it untill He comes back for His church but I think it is as the man said previously,He was trying to get the romans to believe and repent. He went peacefully, without resistance,of His and the Fathers will, thank you LORD,Glory to God.
God bless you all,AMEN
