Something to think about; just hearing His voice audibly is no big deal, He spoke aloud to the children of Israel at the mountain when He made His covenant with them, and they were overjoyed, right? No , they were frightened to death and asked Moses to not let God speak to them any more. It is hard to hear God's voice audibly, because the flesh fears death, rightly so, because God is death to the flesh. But we have something greater than Noah or Abraham or Moses or any of the prophets or kings who heard God's voice. We have god in us, living in our hearts, through the Holy spirit. But we are dull of hearing because we rely on so many other things to tell us what God is saying, all good things for sure, but still things never intended to replace the way of communication which we have with Him by the indwelling Holy Spirit. All of the saints before Jesus would have given anything to have what we take so often for granted.

There are ways to learn to listen to the Holy Spirit that are simple and easy, and the best I know of involves reading scripture with the goal of hearing Him speak to us, individually.I have made it a habit to listen during my time of prayer, best at the beginning unlessmthere is something pressing, and then at the end.

This is just my opinion based on my own experience. In our so called developed cultures we are always busy, both physically and mentally. I ask you to honest with yourself. How often are you perfectly still in both body and mind. It is good for you to take a moment every day to completely shut off from the world and focusing your heart on God. You don't have to bombard God with questions he knows what you want before you do. Showing my love for God is the must uplifting experience I ever have. Try it you might be suprised.

Sharp, good luck or chance, that is where faith steps in! What will really blow you away is when God Our Father answers you before you finish the question in your mind.
Faith, that is why we are called to test all in Jesus Christ is Lord!
God is giving you the ears to hear, faith is all you need , the rest is His work, His gift.
In Jesus, God bless.

Thanks pickles. My faith is very weak at the moment.

With faith I feel there is no certainty, only belief.

Hi pickles,
I am very interested in where you say, " What will really blow you away is when God Our Father answers you before you finish the question in your mind."
I have a thread on witnessing. Surely this could be a post that will edify the saints here. As Jesus has done this to me I recognise this event which you have noted above.

Jesus speaks of faith as a grain of the mustard seed. That means it is measurable. It isn't like an on-off switch, where you either believe or you don't. It was said of Jesus "He will not crush the bruised reed or quench the smallest flame." That's us, in our weakness, with little faith. But the grace of God takes the little and does much with it. You are like that man who approached Jesus and said, "Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief." He received what he needed. It takes trials to grow faith and I am confident that you will emerge from this trial stronger than ever.

Thanks for your responses.

I too have often thought that God has spoken to me through thoughts and other people.

But what if this has just been good luck or chance.

What I'm getting at is why doesn't God make it obvious, instead of giving us subtle clues and hints and remaining completely silent.

Why not just speak? I just have no answer for this.
Jesus did once come to earth and talk directly to us. What happened? He was crucified. Maybe, therefore, being obvious doesn’t work.

Why so bother on wanting God to speak to His people nowadays!

Have you asked why God spoke to these people and why them?
These people have qualities that God saw, which He can greatly used them for His purpose. He won’t just talk to you and say hi or what,… if he’s going to talk to you, He’s asking something from you! Who do you think He is?!

God is talking all the time. Do you talk to Him all the time? Are listening for Him all the time? You said you have thoughts given to you by God. Be happy! That is God talking to you. How wonderful! Don't have self pity. God is talking to you and you be gratful.

Don't think in terms that God used to talk to people in the bible. In those days the people didn't have the Holy Spirit of God living right inside of them. You do. You have the mind of Christ. How much closer than that can you get.

It is fine for you to have a desire in your heart to have the voice of God speak to you out loud. God put that desire in your heart. While you are waiting for this you wait with expecting and you wait happy and in peace.

Expect miracles everyday!

The fact that you are hearing Gods thoughts is wonderful. Many people don't hear Him.

You share the mind of Christ how great is that!

But when He talks are you obeying? You were made to obey God. If you don't He will stop talking.

God uses the Bible to speak to his people. We do not need to hear him directly as did Moses. But we still benefit from the Bible in our day.

God doesn't always speak to us casually because in our fallenness we soon would become familiar and take Him for granted. So while His desire is always intimacy, He must require the right attitude of heart in us in order to consummate the deal.

I put in a new lawn this year, and after the grass was safely up I began to cut back on the frequency of watering. I watered deeply, to promote root growth, but just not every day as I had been doing. This forced the grass to dig deeper in the off-days for its water. It's harder on the plants than simply supplying the water all the time, but they have to learn to survive without me.

That's not a perfect analogy, because God's desire isn't that we do without Him, but he does want us to dig deeper to grow. Every day it's an uphill battle against world, flesh and devil, but He's always with us and only a prayer away.

If you want a real treat, and a heck of a challenge, try reading Rees Howells: Intercessor, to see what is possible in terms of being in close communion with the Spirit. Simply astonishing.

God talks to His people all the time in more ways than the bible. Any follower of Christ should want to hear from God.

I look through the pages of the bible and can't help thinking that its unfair that some people in the bible had such clear revelations of God. Jacob, Moses, Paul, Adam, Mary. These people were spoken to directly, by God. Or by angels. Or were given visions.

God has never spoken to me, at least not audibly. I perceive that I have thoughts that are foreign to my usual way of thinking, which I often attribute to having come from God. But how can I be sure of this?

All I would want is a few words. "Luke, hello, this is God. Have a nice day". Surely that is not hard for God to do.

The standard Christian response is that God speaks to us through His word, and we have the Holy Spirit now to communicate with us. And also that we shouldn't question God's ways.

But I just find God's apparent complete silence for the past 2000 years quite eery, and disturbing, and I want to know why God would not just say a few words to us.

Try fasting, daneil fasted 3 weeks for a vision, the man in acks fasted 4 days no food or water,Isaias walked 3 years barefoot.Jesus said to fast, and he also said dont tell anyone you are fasting.

There you go rambling on with personal opinions not based on scripture which you like so well to do.

I'm sorry which part of my proper handling of scripture offended the heretical Oneness doctrine? You'll have to elaborate as there's not much here except for ad hominem as usual.
