People, those who would discredit the Bible and even some believers have the audacity to lower Jesus to the plane of eathly teachers. Well. it won't work. In this case, for instance, because Jesus' teaching was, for one thing, superior.

It is said Confucius of China also taught the Golden Rule, saying Do not do to others what you would not like them to do to you.

Rabbi Hillel , of Israel, (AD 20) also taught the same thing when he, along with the while shammai was challenged by a gentile who said he would convert to Judaism if they could teach him the whole Torah while he was standing on one foot. Rabbi Hillel said "What you find detestable, do not do to others". So it is wrongly said that Jesus merely used Rabbi Hillel's teaching, It is wrongly said that Jesus' Golden Rule is just the same as these other two and the host of others found in other faiths.

The fact s that Jesus taught DO unto other what you would have them do to you. If you have not seen the difference, It s that Jesus' Golden rule was PROACTIVE. He taught us to actually do good to others, not to ( and way, way beyond) just do nothing bad to others. The versions of the earthly sages were doable even by mere indifference. Being proactive makes a whole world of difference. It is so consistent (consistency is a hallmark trait of Jesus' teachings) with Jesus' teaching His followers to "love your enemies and pray for those who despitefully use you".

Hello @unabashedlly, I agree, The Golden Rule/Matthew 7:12 is simply AMAZING, for many different reasons. For instance, who else than God could have so perfectly summarized and also explained how to apply the Law and the Prophets (IOW, the entirety of the 'horizontal' commandments, laws, precepts, etc. from the OT) using only half of a single verse to do so :)

The "proactive" part of the Lord's command is what truly sets the Lord Jesus' commandment apart from the others (as you said in the OP), as well the fact that we are to always choose to treat others like we would expect/hope to be treated by them, no matter how badly they may actually be treating us in the moment.

God bless you!

Matthew 7
12 However you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
