I really believe in taking the bible literal, however when Jesus stated that only fornication was a reason for divorcee, I think we need to look at the context instead of trying to make a doctrine out of it. The people he was talking to were allowed under the law to divorcee their wives and like everything else they abused that concession and were actually asking Jesus if there was such a thing as a reason that they could not divorcee their wives. This explains the almost angry response of Jesus where he told them plainly that God never intended divorcee in the first place, and unless you have a really good reason God does not accept it. Jesus used fornication because there is no doubt that is a good reason for divorcee. From what I know about the Lord I do not believe for a minute that a woman should remain married to a man who beats her half to death a couple of times a week but does not have an outside girlfriend. I believe there can be definite reasons that a person SHOULD get a divorcee that does not involve anything sexual.

The reason for that, Samuel, is because the guy who beats his wife is not loving her nor is he loving the Lord, but rather he has made an idol out of his power to dominate, and his sick desire to abuse, above any call to love. His idolatry is seen by God the same as adultery, just as God constantly used idolatry symbolically as unfaithfulness to Him.
