There was only 1 just man in all of Sodom and Gomorrah (LOT) and he was delivered....the rest were lost and yes they are still burning and suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.....
Sodom and Gomorrah are at the bottom of the Dead Sea. Why do you think they are still burning? You say you know what the word hell means, that you have studied it extensively, but here you throw it over for the Lake of Fire yet again. I find that many Christians use the word "Hell" when they are really referring to the Lake of Fire. It is an error they seem loathe to correct.

By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

Those in the cities were destroyed according to Scripture (Gen 19:23-25 given above). A few verses later it again says, God destroyed the cities of the valley. Today they are no longer burning. Word 7843, destroy, is used multiple times in relation to the cities, meaning to ruin completely, devastate, etc:

http://biblehub.com/hebrew/leshachatah_7843.htm

Genesis 19:13
HEB: וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥נוּ יְהוָ֖ה לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃
NAS: has sent us to destroy it.
KJV: hath sent us to destroy it.
INT: has sent the LORD to destroy

Judges 6:5

HEB: וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ בָאָ֖רֶץ לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃
NAS: into the land to devastate it.
KJV: into the land to destroy it.
INT: came the land to devastate

2 Samuel 24:16

HEB: הַמַּלְאָ֥ךְ ׀ יְרֽוּשָׁלִַם֮ לְשַׁחֲתָהּ֒ וַיִּנָּ֤חֶם יְהוָה֙
NAS: toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD
KJV: upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD
INT: the angel Jerusalem to destroy relented the LORD

Hello Magenta,

Sodom and Gomorrah are at the bottom of the Dead Sea. Why do you think they are still burning?

The answer is, yes, those individuals of Sodom and Gomorrah are still burning. Their bodies have returned to the dust of the earth, but their spirits/souls are still in Sheol/Hades in torment in flame, just as the rich man of the rich man and Lazarus.

Scripture make very clear that when a person dies their spirit goes to one of two places. When a believer dies, their spirit/soul departs and goes to be in the presence of the Lord. When the wicked die, their spirit/soul ends up in Sheol/Hades where they will remain until the great white throne judgment, which takes place at the end the thousand year. Belo are the correct definitions of Hell and the lake of fire:

Sheol/Hades = a location under the earth often translated as hell, is the place of the unsaved departed spirits. It is a temporary place of punishment, where the spirits/souls of the unrighteous dead will remain until the great white throne judgment. At that time they will receive resurrected bodies and will stand before God where they will be accountable for every sin they committed. From there, everyone's name not found written in the book of life will then be thrown into the lake of fire.

Tartarus/Tartaroo = Used only one time in 2 Pet.2:4 and also referred to in Jude 6, by description, most likely referring to those angels who took for themselves wives from the daughters of mankind, defiling themselves and who were put into chains of darkness until the judgment.

Lake of fire = Also referred to as the second death and identified by the use of the word Gehenna. Unlike Sheol/Hades which is temporary, Gehenna/lake of fire is the final place of on-going punishment for all who names are not found written in the book of life.

Everyone who dies without Christ, at the time of death their spirit/soul departs from the body and goes into Sheol/Hades, where they wait in torment in flame until the great white throne judgment. There they will stand before God and be judged and then thrown into the lake of fire, conscious and existing.

As far as HELL.....IT will be cast into the LAKE OF FIRE at the Great White Throne judgment.....HELL is ETERNAL....and the SMOKE of their torment ASCENDS FOREVER before the throne......

Why is it so hard to understand the eternal consequence of HELL and the LAKE of FIRE?

And you have proof that Sodom and Gomorrah are at the bottom of the dead sea? Which changes nothing.....the people are still cooking as we type!

You left Gehenna out of your list for words improperly defined
as hell in some of the English translations. Shall I define it for you?

Gehenna appears 12 times, and is always rendered "hell." It has nothing to do with sheol or hades and to translate it by the same word as is done in the common versions is unfaithful and inexcusable.

Gehenna is a proper name, and should be so used. There is no warrant for translating it "hell," just theological bias. It is the name of a place. It appears 13 times in the Old Testament and is always there treated as a proper name of an actual site -- the Valley of Hinnom.

In the New Testament, although truly it is used with a symbolic as well as a literal meaning, still it is on the literal meaning that the symbolic is based, and this cannot be understood if it is falsely translated.

For Jesus’ allusions to it to be understood, the facts of the name and place must be known. And one fact we shall find throughout -- it was a place of
destruction and corruption, and not of preservation in torment.

Utter consuming destruction is always the fundamental idea behind this word.

Maybe that is why... do you purposely overlook it because it's meaning is spot on
as to the Truth of what Scripture promotes over and over and over again through
a multiplicity of verses (many of which I have also given), as the end of the
unbelieving, which is what I promote, and shows your view to be false?

I have properly defined Gehenna, Hades, Sheol, and Tartaros many times.
Likewise, I have read your perversions of Scripture before. What in the world
do you hope to accomplish when you yourself admit that after forty years of
study your beliefs have not changed one iota?

God is never portrayed in Scripture as a merciless fiend who delights
in the wanton and purposeless eternal torture of His Own creatures.

We are told, on the contrary, that in the great coming day of judgment, the wicked shall receive few or many stripes with shame and contempt, according to what they have done, and that the end of them all is eternal destruction -- a complete blotting out -- a consuming into smoke and ashes.

The conception of eternal intense torture for the vast majority of mankind, with the few redeemed forever feasting their eyes on the scene with pitiless satisfaction, is so hideous and monstrous that it is difficult to think any rational mind has ever believed it.
Hell is the GRAVE

You promote the lie of Satan. "You shall not surely die." I pray God
opens your eyes to this shameful lie you tell over and over and over again.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Perish, word number 622 in Strong's Concordance means to utterly destroy. I will
take Scripture over what you promote any day :) Life everlasting is only attained
through faith in Christ's propitiatory sacrifice on our behalf. A soul is the body plus
the breath of life. A dead person has no breath of life .

Original Word: ἀπόλλυμι

Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: apollumi
Phonetic Spelling: (ap-ol'-loo-mee)
Short Definition: I destroy, lose, am perishing
Definition: (a) I kill, destroy, (b) I lose, mid: I am perishing
(the resultant death being viewed as certain).

HELPS Word-studies
622 apóllymi (from 575 /apó, "away from," which intensifies ollymi, "to destroy")
– properly, fully destroy, cutting off entirely (note the force of the prefix,
575 /apó).

622 /apóllymi ("violently/completely perish") implies permanent (absolute) destruction, i.e. to cancel out (remove); "to die, with the implication of ruin and destruction" (L & N, 1, 23.106); cause to be lost (utterly perish) by experiencing a miserable end.

Actually, I did include under the lake of fire. Here is what I wrote from the previous post:

Lake of fire = Also referred to as the second death and identified by the use of the word Gehenna. Unlike Sheol/Hades which is temporary, Gehenna/lake of fire is the final place of on-going punishment for all who names are not found written in the book of life.

So, how is it that you said that I left it out?

You did not give it it's own heading. Also, you have defined it improperly, for you say: Unlike Sheol/Hades which is temporary, Gehenna/lake of fire is the final place of on-going punishment for all who names are not found written in the book of life.

You are applying a single symbolic use in Revelation to all other uses, which
I gave the proper definition for. You seem to have missed it, again. Here:

Gehenna appears 12 times, and is always rendered "hell." It has nothing to do with sheol or hades and to translate it by the same word as is done in the common versions is unfaithful and inexcusable.

You make a common error in thinking that death is not everlasting punishment. I hope you can understand why I find the idea of death not being a suitable punishment (as you and others seem to think), when it is final, it lasts ever after, and is explicitly stated again and again as the end for those who do not accept Jesus Christ.

Great lengths are taken in life to avoid death. Life is generally considered preferable to death after all. Many of our efforts are geared towards making life better, living as long and as healthily as possibly, preserving life when possible, because the alternative, death, is such an abhorrent reality.

Slavery to sin is due to the fear of death, and death is the consequence of sin. The latter is plainly stated in many places in Scripture. You have to overlook an awful lot to pretend it is not explicitly stated many times. God can destroy both body and soul. It plainly states that the soul that sins will be destroyed, those not found in Christ at the end of the age perish. You say God will not do this, when His Word says He will.

Many erroneously assume the soul to be immortal. Only God has immortality, and only those in Christ put on the immortal. Your theology is off on many points. To say death is conscious existence flies in the face of, well, just about everything. Those in the dust SHALL awake, they are not awake and conscious now, nor will they be when they pass into the second death. We put on the imperishable through Christ and THEY that are to pass into the second death remain clothed in the perishable and perish, just as Scripture states..

Malachi 4:3 (KJV)

And ye shall tread down the wicked;

for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet

in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.

ashes?

Romans 6:23 (KJV)

For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Did Jesus bear our punishment on the tree or not?
By Christ's sacrifice was the condemnation of the law removed? (for those who believe)
It is only through the acceptance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
that the penalty was wiped out ("the handwriting of requirements").

But only the penalty, not the law!

By grace I am saved, but bad guys in the past took grace and turned it into Lawlessness.
And we where warned this was going to happen before it come about.

Exactly what I said.......

This truth in no way, shape or form alleviates the consequences of the law being nailed to the cross of Christ and taken out of the way for ALL you exercise faith into Jesus.......the LOST will suffer the eternal consequence of rejecting the "cure" and pay the price.......the cure being the blood of JESUS applied by faith!

There is no point of The lake of fire being a place of continuous torture for those who have not accepted Christ. What does God or the people in heaven gain from those wicked souls to be tortured for all eternity? Do we look down from heaven and think oh how much better it is for us up here? No I dont think so. I agree with magenta, that when hell is thrown into the lake of fire it is the second death, and death is final. You are blotted out and exist no more, that is the right thing to do for a God that still loves someone enough to grant them what they wish, not to live with God. So the kind thing is to destroy them, not torture them endlessly. Thats my two cents, if I'm being a heretic, please explain why. Thanks.

If you are, this thread is for you.

Firstly let me say that whats known about hell is an incomplete concept, Jesus used very figurative language to explain hell. But I take the hint, you don't want to end up there.

Why?

Because it's the end of the line, the garbage heap where damaged souls are disassembled. If you end up there, your not going to be a humane soul, more like an empty dark vessel.

A corrupted soul may see itself as still human (A good human) but the assembly of God won't.

James said hell was deep blackness, where all the lights go out.

The old testament says hell is utter destruction.

Jesus said "Where the worm never die"

Are dead souls eaten or absorbed back into reusable energy?

Amen.
No, souls are not eaten or absorbed into reusable energy. Hell is created by God as everlasting torture for those who did not obey God in this lifetime. "With flames of fire He will take vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of His Son."

I am not afraid of hell because I have complete confidence that God will do what He said- save those who obey Him, and since I obey I'm not scared. He would not have His Son die for nothing- it does save a group of people- I just need to stay in that group (Christ's Church). And I'm not talking about the Elect- the judgers, gossipers, etc who warm the pews. I'm talking about the Very Elect- the group inside the group that are genuine.

Jesus used very figurative language to explain hell.
According to who? I don't know why you continue to claim that hell is an incomplete concept, for scripture is very clear regarding its description and purpose. Consider the following:

"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life" - Matt.25:46

If Jesus is using figurative language regarding hell, then that would mean that the righteous going to eternal life would also have to be figurative. If eternal life for the righteous means on-going existence in God's kingdom, then eternal punishment for the wicked must also be on-going existence in punishment in separation from God. You can't have one meaning annihilation and the other meaning on-going existence. Regarding the verse above, however you interpret "eternal" for one group, it would have to be the same meaning for the other. If eternal punishment is brief, then eternal life for the righteous must be brief. If eternal life is everlasting, then eternal punishment must be everlasting. But the fact is that since we know that eternal life for the righteous is never ending, then eternal punishment must also be never ending and that because the same word "aionios" is used for both groups. Consider the following:

"They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name."

Regarding the above, there is no figurative language used at all. In order for the smoke of their torment to rise up forever and ever and to have no rest day or night, it would require the individual to exist in order to experience it. For a person who is annihilated/nonexistent cannot experience not having any rest day or night. It would be something that would require conscious awareness of one's senses in order to experience those things.

Hello Wild,

The problem with your theory is that, we are going by what we think, but by what scripture states. Also, the punishment that the wicked endure has nothing to do with the righteous. They have sinned against an infinite and Holy God and it is God who has set the punishment.

Scripture identifies both life and death as states of existence. That is one the teachings of the rich man and Lazarus, which demonstrates two men dying with their spirits being found somewhere else. Those who believe what you are claiming, turn the event of the rich man and Lazarus into parable in order to discredit it. For if it is a real event, then it completely does away with the idea of annihilation.

Revelation 9:6

During THOSE DAYS men will seek death but will not find it, they will long to die but death will flee from them"

I argue for annihilation from this verse in addition to the many other verses scripture provides. This is speaking of a period of 5 months when scorpions from the abyss torment men ON EARTH. This is the only time scripture teaches that men will desire to die to escape their torment with no success and for only a period of 5 months. This verse is key in showing that God has not planned for the perpetual suffering of people in flames

Anyone burning in flames would desire to be unconscious in order for their suffering to end so why doesn't scripture say the wicked will desire death when burning in the lake of fire? It only says there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth but no reference to the wicked wanting the torment to stop? It's because the torment will stop. The flames will not burn the wicked eternally, only on the day that fire rains upon them. It will be an unquenchable Fire, the kind that you cannot put out by dropping and rolling or smacking your body. That fire will burn until the wicked are literally devoured, consumed and turned to ashes

And here are other verses for anyone who cares to do some studying on the topic
