Acts 23:3,4
Paul insults a priest ( a pharisee)
calling him a white washed wall!
then he apoligized to the man and quoted (Eccl.10:20)
But if you read Matthew 3:7-12
John the baptist said a whole lot worst to the pharisees when he called them Generation of Vipers and told them to bring forth fruits worthy of repentance.
And not only John
but also Jesus insults them too
read Matthew chapter 23 just about the whole chapter!
calling them fools and blind guides, generation of vipers, hypocrites etc.
Now My Question is:
Why was it wrong for Paul to insult the Scribes and Pharisee????
But Jesus and John the Baptist Could throw insults all over the place?????

Jesus nor John the Baptist threw insults all over the place. He was correcting them. And I assure you, there IS a difference...

Hmm, "brood of vipers".

I think by modern terms, we would think that is an insult.

"The fool hath said..." <--- probably an insult by worldly standards

Matt 23

13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. ((isn't this pretty much the same thing Paul said to the High Preist))
28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

sure sounds like insults to me.

*sigh* If you think that go ahead. I don't think Jesus even in His human form would insult people. No one should go around insulting anyone. It can very easily be a sin.

Lean not on your own understanding.

What does the bible say?

He says the Pharisees are a "brood of vipers".

If I called a bunch of people a brood of vipers, atleast on modernistic terms, we would think that is me insulting them.

True...but I don't think he meant it as belittling them to the point of where he's just going at them without thinking twice. That's what I think of insulting. Someone belittling another person just to belittle them and to just be a jerk. Jesus wasn't doing that.

Jesus rebuked the pharisees because they were teachers of the law yet they have shut the door to heaven due to leaving the most important things out (LOVE),

Luke 11:42 (KJV)
But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

We have the right to judge with right judgement. We have the right to judge on the things they say, nothing from the outside at all.

1 Corinthians 2:15 (KJV)
The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.

John 7:24 (KJV)
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.

First of all, this was not just a priest or just a pharisee.
This was The High Priest in Jerusalem

Secondly, Paul when taken back his remark, quoted from the Law not
Eccl. Ex. 22:28

And as for the rest I think you have answered your own question.
Paul stateting that he was a Pharisee and son of a Pharisee he knew the Law well,
So he knew better than to say such a thing, to the ruler of the people.

Blessings

he doesn't actually apologize but just says he would not have spoken against the High Priest because he likes to live by this standard....

1 Corinthians 9:19-23
New King James Version (NKJV)

19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; 20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law,[a] that I might win those who are under the law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ[c]), that I might win those who are without law; 22 to the weak I became as[d] weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

we are told to follow the Holy Spirit and to speak the Truth in love.

do you think Jesus still loved those Pharisee and Scribes even though He told them they were a brood of vipers?

Do you think He said it to insult them or to make them repent and turn from their sins to TRUE worship of God instead of lies?

Paul said he did not know that the person was the high priest when he called him a whited wall, and then said a person should not speak evil of the ruler of the people.

The reason that John and Jesus spoke against the Pharisees is because they should have known better because they were leaders in spiritual matters and were not in the truth of it,not even according to some Old Testament truths. They should of known about Jesus coming and should have recognized Him,seeing they were supposed to be wise in the Old Testament testifying that the savior to come will be a lowly and humble man,and be God Himself as told in Isaiah that God would come and speak to His peopleand save them from their sins.
