Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. (K.J.V)
David wrote Psalm 51 after he was confronted by the Prophet Nathan who rebuked him for having Slept with Uriah, getting his wife pregnant and then having him killed and then taking his wife, he was convicted but not condemned and he said to Nathan, "I have sinned" while God pronounced Judgment on him (II Samuel 12), God did not kill him.
David, now been convicted, wrote Psalm 51: the word used in the original language for Broken (Shaw-bar) means to burst, literally or figuratively, and the word for Contrite ( daw-kaw' )means to break , crouch (bow down, stoop down).
God will not reject a hear that is humbled and distressed by its sin, and David being a man after God's own heart knew that full well.
Every day I have to face reality, that though I try to be flawless, I am not. I have failed time and time again, but God does not give up on me ... Rather, Paul says that his strength is made perfect in weakness, so I am not proud of the mistakes I have made or the ones that I will make, I go to God, my heart broken because of my failures... I learn to depend heavily on him and not myself.
Jesus spoke well in Matthew 5 when he said ,"blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom of heaven is theirs"
Until we realize how helpless we are and unable to do it by ourselves, and until our hearts are broken by our sin... We will continue to go hold ourselves back.
