Reading through Lukes account of the birth of Christ, one cannot miss the irony. The most significant event in the history of humanity was unfolding and some of Israels least significant people were the first to know about it. The news was told to humble shepherds. If we are honest, this flies in the face of convention or what we have known and experienced. Yet on this one night, Angels sought out a group of humble Shepherds and shared the good news. Then they treated these frightened men and boys to a musical experience for which we will have to die to experience - literally.
So if God bypassed social class and societal norms in delivering this great news and given the humble circumstances of Christs birth, shouldn't we let go of our grip on the same labels, mindsets and stereotypes that keep us separated? "Goodwill to all people" was their message that night. What is ours?
