Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends,
and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had
compassion on thee.
Mark 5:19 (KJV)
The word compassion is literally translated as "suffer with." It is often
used when a person helps someone with his/her struggles in life. In Mark 5,
Jesus showed compassion on a man who had been possessed by demons. Although
Jesus was not possessed by demons, He knew what it was like to be tempted by
the devil (Matthew 4). Jesus reached out to this demon-possessed individual
and healed him physically, mentally, emotionally, and above all,
spiritually. After healing the man, Jesus told him to go and tell others
about how Jesus showed compassion.
Today, Jesus wants us Christians to show others that He is the compassionate
Christ. Jesus endured hardship and difficulty in His earthly life. He was
even crucified on the cross for our sins. His resurrection from the dead
gives us hope of eternal life. We have a future beyond our earthly lives.
However, for those who don't know Jesus Christ, there is no hope for the
future. Earthly death for them means eternal separation from the God who
truly loves them and cares for them. Should it be this way though? If we
are followers of Jesus Christ, then we need to tell others about how Jesus
showed compassion for us when He paid our sin debt in full on the cross and
when He became the Lord and Savior of our lives. We can't let our hearts
grow cold to humanity. I encourage you today to tell someone of God's love
for them.
