It falls, it drips
From the trees
From my lips
Rain and shine
Honey and wine
Soft breeze and sleet
Victory, defeat
Sunshine and rain
Pleasure and pain
When rain has stopped
Still, all those drops
From the skies
From my eyes
As life flies by
With shudders and sighs
Nobody sees
What falls from the trees.
Knowing, then's a funny thing
you think you know what it will bring
but knowledge comes and knowledge goes
it always ebbs and always flows
you think you know just what you hold
it runs like water, works like gold
and then one day, you'll know you've got
so much less than what you thought
because, to think that you have known
is to know you knew nothing once you're home.
Expectations... such a dreaded word
it means someone is going to try and fit me into a mold
to tell me what I ought to be striving toward
to place on me their ideas of bronze, silver and gold
and sometimes it means the things I hope for myself
what I want, what I seek to attain
how easy it is to put higher things on the shelf
and forget that the material is in vain
it's far easier to fix our eyes on the things we can see
the temporary, instantaneous dross
God, please make me into whatever You want me to be
let me count all these other things as loss
though it seems like it must be an impossible goal
how much closer will I come, if I aim for that mark
than if I dwell on the fact that I have an imperfect soul
and use that to excuse a lack of true spark.
