Here at the third trumpet, it is difficult to say exactly what John saw in his vision. That being said, we have the words to describe this object as being “a great star burning like a torch,” which falls from heaven, the result being it landing on a third of the of rivers and springs of water, with many people dying from drinking it.
At one time I imagined that John could be describing an ICBM that is arcing back down into earth’s atomosphere, which would indeed look like a torch with its nose pointed down towards the earth and with fire coming out the back of the rocket. However, since the results are that one third of the rivers and fresh water are contaiminated, I can’t justify one nuclear ICBM missle affecting a third of the rivers and fresh water over the entire planet.
Another thought of what this great star burning like a torch might be, led me to the possibility of it being a comet. After all, a comet has body up front with a coma and a tail trailing behind it and therefore, this could fit with John's description. The question is, what is it that will be falling upon a third of the rivers and springs of water that contamiates it so that many people die from drinking it? Wormwood means “biterness” which as stated, proves to be fatal.
A comet is made up of an amalgamation of rock, dust, water ice, and frozen gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ammonia.What if what John was seeing was a future comet entering into the earths atmosphere?
A comet is continually exposed to the radiation that the sun emits. Also, a comet is not solid like an asteroid, and therefore upon entering the earth’s atomosphere, it would most likely explode into millions of pieces, which in turn would be carried along by the jet stream and other winds. Now, what if when it broke up, the matterial, the gases, dust and ice, which has been absorbing the radiation from our sun, was carried along through our atmosphere and settling into the earth's rivers and fresh water while retaining the harmful affects of the radiation that it had been absorbing. As the scripture states, “many people will die from drinking the water,” which could be caused by the radiation in the water as a result of the comet exploding in our atmosphere. People would literally be drinking radioactive water and destroying their bodies from the inside out. Though hypothetical, this could be a good match for what John was describing.
Here at the third trumpet is the next closest description to a percentage, stating that “many people” die from drinking the water. How many is many? Since the scripture says that this object falls on a third of the rivers and springs of water, that would provide water for a vast amount of people.
